Summary: Red will always want more from Snow.
She loved the night. She always had, ever since she'd been a little girl. The most boring meadow in the daytime could be an adventurous and fun place at night to romp and frolic, and she'd never wanted to frolic before as she did these evenings. There was something different about the girl for whom she waited these nights. Something different, utterly special, and wonderful.
Red closed her eyes and reached out with her senses. The wolf was growling within her, yearning to be free, but she wanted to spend time with Snow tonight. She wanted to spend time with her friend all the time. She didn't quite understand what was coming over her, at least not yet. It was said that girls were not supposed to feel this way about other girls. It was boys with whom they were supposed to yearn to spend their every waking hour, boys with whom they were supposed to sneak out of the house to be with at night. Boys -- Red sniffed with indignation -- could keep to themselves, especially that dreaded Prince Charming!
She smelled her before she heard her, and she still began to hear the telltale sounds her friend made miles before she reached her. To the villagers, Snow would not have smelled that delightful. She did not smell of any fancy perfumes, or any perfume for that matter. Red herself had found that mixing lavender flowers with vanilla oils created a lovely scent, but her friend had been raised by seven Dwarves who barely understood the importance of bathing.
Likewise, others would not have been able to hear her coming. To humans' ears, Snow's careful footsteps through the forest would not have made a single sound, but Red still heard her approach as surely as she smelled her. She heard the slight step of booted feet upon twigs that barely felt her light weight. She heard the gentle whisper of sashaying clothing as she sprinted through the forest. Most of all, she heard her gentle breath quickening with the further she ran.
The further she ran, Red thought, to meet her, to be with her on this full moon night. She closed her eyes as she listened to Snow's breathing and beyond that, to her very heartbeat. Her heart was pounding as she ran. Red smiled, her blood almost purring within her with lust, as she imagined all the ways she could make Snow's heart pound. All the ways she already had in this very hidden grove, surrounded by the tall sentries in which some nights they liked to climb and swoop.
The Prince could never pleasure the wild bandit as she did! Snow was fooling herself if she truly believed she wanted to ever become his tamed Princess, but if she truly believed that, why did she still sneak away and come through the woods at night, regardless of the Evil Queen's or Granny's threats, to meet with her? Why did she let her touch her in such special ways and places? Why did she choose to spend these nights with her instead of the Prince?
Because the Prince, Red knew, was not readily available. Her top, painted lip pulled back in a soft growl at the thought, and she hurriedly shoved it away. She would not allow thoughts of any man, or anyone else for that matter, to ruin their special times together! She had waited all week for this night.
Realizing that her most cherished friend was almost there, Red leapt up into a nearby tree. She waited until Snow finally came to a stop beneath that very tree's branches and began to look around the grove. She heard Snow's heart skip a beat with fear, heard her lovely lips part with a hushed, "Red?"
Red grinned as relief rushed over her. She could hear the fear in her friend's voice and knew that Snow would be as devastated as she would be if they missed tonight's frolicking time! She leapt soundlessly from the tree and came down on top of Snow. Their noses touched, and Red laughed merrily as she gazed directly into Snow White's startled, brown eyes. Despite her surprise, her eyes were as soft as a baby deer's new coat. They were beautiful, breathtaking... but Red was just beginning. "Tag," she whispered and ran her tongue swiftly over Snow's lips before either of them could think twice about her action.
Then she sprang off of her and raced through the trees. "Oh no, you don't!" She heard Snow quickly recover behind her and, laughing, come chasing after her. She'd let her catch her. The startling thought she'd always allow her to catch her came to Red as she sprinted out into a stray moonbeam. She looked behind her, watched how the silver moonlight played over her best friend's beautiful image, and finally understood what was happening, what had slowly been growing since the very first moment she had met Snow White.
She was in love! She'd found her mate! Even if Snow did go back to the Prince -- and she would eventually, Red knew --, she'd never stop allowing her to catch her! She'd never stop going to her, either, to rescue her, for her friendship, or everything more Red longed for their friendship to be.
"I wasn't sure you'd come," Ruby spoke, coming out of the trees years later.
Mary Margaret lifted her chin. She caught her best friend's gaze and held it firmly. "I'll always come."
"You have your daughter now. You can have that family you've always wanted -- "
"I had to become Queen to rule the kingdom, to save the kingdom." Mary Margaret reached out, took Ruby's hands in hers, and entwined their fingers. "But you will always be my family. And more." She pulled her to her.
Ruby let her kiss her. She would never be everything she yearned to be for her, but she would always take any and every part of Mary Margaret's life that was offered to her.
