Summary: Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue are finally married. Jiang Cheng takes a moment to give thanks. Fluff. Lotta fluff and sap.

Jiang Cheng sat with his back to Nie Mingjue’s chest on their cabin’s porch. The huge blanket Nie Mingjue had draped around them both was wonderfully warm against the chilly spring evening. The flavors of spicy hot chocolate danced on his tongue. He cupped the mug and relaxed against Nie Mingjue.

Overhead the moon sailed, larger than life, trailed by an entourage of curling, wispy clouds as lacy as a wedding veil. In the forest around them, sleepy birds chirped and frogs peeped. A far off stream burbled quietly. Now and then something larger picked a path through the dense trees. Occasionally, a pair of eyes blinked at the curious humans, full of reflected moonlight and mystery.

Everything else was silence.

Jiang Cheng practically purred as Nie Mingjue pressed a kiss to the top of his head. Those strong arms held him tighter and he couldn’t resist a happy noise.

“We did it,” he whispered, tilting his head back to look at Nie Mingjue. “We’re married!”

Nie Mingjue had the sappiest smile on his face as he leaned down to kiss his husband properly. “That we are, my heart.” His voice was a baritone rumble against Jiang Cheng’s back, sending shivers down his spine.

All his life, Jiang Cheng had been told he was too cold. Too angry, too harsh, too insecure, too sharp-edged, too bitter. He’d been warned time and time again that no one would ever love him.

That he wasn’t capable of loving someone properly and no one would want him because of all his prickles. But in Nie Mingjue’s arms it was hard to feel anything other than warm, soft, and happy. And just a tiny bit smug because who else had someone as wonderful as Nie Mingjue? No one, that’s who. And this guy, handsome, smart, and relentlessly selfless had chosen him. Nie Mingjue had chosen Jiang Cheng.

It was a lot of feelings. Jiang Cheng was helpless to put up his usual bluster, though. There wasn’t any need, anyway. No one was going to mock him for happy tears, for daring to be soft, for allowing someone to take care of him for a change. Not when Nie Mingjue let Jiang Cheng to take care of him in return. Not when they were a team and Nie Mingjue trusted Jiang Cheng to catch when he fell.

A real partnership. A real marriage of hearts.

Jiang Cheng felt like a fairy tale princess. He was pretty sure if he started singing, birds and bunnies would come out of the woods to carry the chorus. The thought made him scoff into his cocoa. Absurd.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Nie Mingjue asked curiously.

“Just hadn’t expected to ever be this happy,” Jiang Cheng said, substituting a truth for the ludicrous thought.

That earned him a bone-crushing hug and Nie Mingjue’s hot mouth on his, devouring and intense. Jiang Cheng gasped for breath when Nie Mingjue pulled away.

“Do you mean it?” Nie Mingjue demanded in a low voice, eyes searching Jiang Cheng’s face. “My heart, are you truly happy?”

“What brought that on?” Jiang Cheng frowned, mind racing. “Did someone say something?”

Nie Mingjue chuckled, “No, no. Nothing like that. It’s just. With all the family drama and your parents … it’s really good to hear you say those words.”

Jiang Cheng felt silly then. “I’ve never been happier,” he promised. “The ceremony, the reception, everything was perfect. My soul, I swear, I have no regrets. None at all.”

His cocoa mug was plucked out of his hands and he was tumbled over. He found himself with his head pillowed on Nie Mingjue’s forearm with his husband’s other hand caressing his cheek. They were pressed together from chest to knee.

Nie Mingjue’s eyes were luminous with unshed tears in the moonlight as he looked down at Jiang Cheng. He leaned down, kissing Jiang Cheng with unexpected gentleness. Jiang Cheng melted.

“I wasn’t worried,” Nie Mingjue whispered, “Not really. But I want your happiness more than anything else, A-Cheng. I’m so glad.”

“You’re ridiculous,” Jiang Cheng teased, poking Nie Mingjue in the cheek. “Does your baby brother know you’re this much of a crybaby.”

Nie Mingjue grinned. “Yes. And he’ll tell you it’s too late to give me back. If you didn’t know before, that’s on you.”

Jiang Cheng huffed and twined his arms around Nie Mingjue’s neck. “I’d like to see anyone try to separate us,” he muttered, nipping Nie Mingjue’s lower lip. “No one could be so foolish.”

Nie Mingjue laughed outright and kissed him again.

If the moonlight or the woodland critters minded the odd noises coming from the isolated cabin’s porch, none of them did anything about it.

Hours later, after moonset when the edges of night were curling back at dawn’s approach, Jiang Cheng took a moment to be thankful everything he had. Nie Mingjue curled around him, heavily sleeping body kissed by starlight, was chief among Jiang Cheng’s many blessings.

When the honeymoon was over, he had to find a new job. He had to finish moving the last of his belongings out of his parents' house and into Nie Mingjue’s. They had a new life to shape together.

He didn’t think it would change much, they’d lived together for five years already. Theirs was a solid relationship no matter what his parents thought. Instead of dread, Jiang Cheng was looking forward to his new life. His parents wouldn’t expect him to keep his promise to shut them out. They’d keep trying to use his siblings and his filial piety against him.

But now Nie Mingjue couldn’t be taken from him.

And Nie Mingjue’s family accepted him wholly. And supported them both.

It was more than he’d hoped for and he was grateful.

“You’re thinking again,” Nie Mingjue whispered against his neck. “I can hear the cogs turning.”

"Being thankful," Jiang Cheng murmured, turning in Nie Mingjue's arms to face him. "I love you, my soul."

"And I love you, my heart."
