Unable to sleep despite her calming tea and breathing exercises, Mist followed the next step on her checklist and got out of bed. She pulled a robe on over her t-shirt and sleep pants, making her way to the kitchen for another cup of tea. Her blood felt too warm, too restless in her veins.

While her bedroom was always kept pitch black, radiant moonlight crept in around the edges of her kitchen curtains. A full moon, then. That explained the restlessness. Mist decided on a short walk while she drank her tea and went to the entry, slipping on beach shoes before going outside.

It took a minute for her eyes to adjust, with no noise pollution and the moon hanging full and heavy, it was fully as bright as day on her little island. The winding path around her house built into an artificial hill was paved with white sand that glowed in the night. Nothing hindered her as she strolled.

Insects and birds made sleepy noises as Mist took a moment to check the various little hidden ponds. She used her water and air powers to keep the salinity low for the animals sharing her island.

They couldn’t been seen now, of course, but she’d noticed a week ago that some bee-eaters and grey wagtails had joined her precious barn-swallows. She hoped the kestrel that had claimed one of the taller trees would go easy on them. There were plenty of fish to eat, after all.

The winding, partially hidden path took Mist all the way around her island. It wasn’t really so large as all that, most of the Maldives islands in this area were on the small side, little more than spits of sand and perhaps a palm. But bit by bit, her experiments with coral, along with how she used her powers, were slowly yielding results. The sands of her beaches were a little higher every day.

If she kept at it, she’d be able to find a way to help slow her new country from disappearing below the ocean entirely. She was tempted to just pick a pole and cut loose, see how much ice she could add before she burned out. But that would be an inelegant use of her power and would probably kill her before enough was made to make a difference.

Still, Mist was sometimes very tempted to use a hammer on problems that required a microscope and tweezers. She shoved her white, wispy, anemone-like hair behind her ears as a breeze kicked up and whipped it about. Overhead, sleepy birds chirped their protest.

Mist put a hand over the top of her teacup to prevent debris from getting in as a skirl of sand met her where the path gave way to open beach. Waves murmured and roared, crashing on the packed sand.

Suddenly it was so much louder than it had been, when the woodlands she had been nurturing, were providing a sound and wind barrier. The moon seemed to hang low, its reflection like fingers stirring up still waters into a froth. Stars winked to one another. Salt tang stung the air, tearing away the scent of trees, jasmine, and tea.

Mist’s blood roared in her veins, matching the howling of the ocean. It took all her control not to tear her clothes off, drop the cup, and fling herself into the water. But if she did that now, she wouldn’t come back until dawn. She’d wash up on her own beach, sun-crisped and salt-baked. Her fragile albino skin would be one big blister.

She sipped her tea instead and made for the dock she’d built for guests, rare though they were, to tie off their boats. She could sit there and put her feet in the water without worrying it would sweep her away. With the ocean pounding in her veins, sleep wasn’t too likely any time soon, anyway.

It was quieter on the dock’s section of the island. The coral reef was flourishing here, creating something of a break water, and the curve of the island’s arm provided some protection. Mist sat.

Curious fishes, silver gilt in the light, rose to nibble her toes. They left in a hurry, disappointed she wasn’t food. The tickling sensation made her laugh.

It was time to admit the walk might have been a miscalculation. Water powers were hard to reign in during a full moon and monsoon season. Add a brisk breeze to tease the air power and she might have been a bit of salt spray being tossed back and forth between the two elements before being reclaimed by the sea.

She didn’t feel human at all with her power singing in her blood louder than her heartbeat. It occurred to her that she might want to journal that. Her Kraken-supplied therapist would no doubt find it interesting.

Now that she could think, she found it interesting. Mist teased strands of her power, thin as fishing line out of the churning center of her and let it into the water. Where it touched, she could read the surroundings. It was so much easier to adjust the current here, taunt the tide there.

With her power augmented by the moon’s pull, she could coax the sea into depositing more and more sand on her beaches, building her island higher. She could feel it working.

Would it work in places her power hadn’t saturated? Mist wondered if someone would let her borrow their island next full moon, making a note to ask around. There would probably be a lot of volunteers.

Aquariana had mentioned people were becoming interested in Mist’s research now that there were a few years’ of consistent results to pull on.

Now that the cetacean Maldive citizens were taking notice of her work.

Now that Mist wasn’t a super-villain on the edge of burnout anymore.

She grinned, lifting her face to the moon’s kiss. Happy to receive benediction from the source of her power's boost.

Wonderfully atmospheric. I wanted to be on the beach hearing the ocean's roar.

Enjoyable. I liked the juxtaposition between the fantasy elements/superpowers and the mundane things we can all relate to, like having a checklist of things to do when you can't sleep, to journaling, and seeing a therapist.
