Title: It All Started With a Big Bang
Fandom: Supergirl (DCTV)
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 667
Summary: Winn and Brainy try to persuade Alex into picking up some new supplies.

“Give me one good reason why I should let you buy a cart full of fireworks.”

Alex is giving both Winn and Brainy her stern face as she stands at the head of the DEO science lab, invoice in hand. Both of them look at each other, having a silent conversation about who’s going to argue this point, and Winn turns back with a frown.

“Is there a wrong answer to this question?”

“Yes. There are many wrong answers to this question.” Alex raises an eyebrow at both of them. “But there is one really good answer that might get me to say yes, if you are persuasive enough.”

Winn nods. “Is that one really excellent answer ‘For science’?”

The head of the DEO rolls her eyes. “No. Not so much.”

“We want to work the fireworks into a prototype. You always have been a fan of explosions.” Brainy shrugs. “We thought it would be an easy sell.”

“What kind of prototype?”

“So this alien seems to have a wide range of efficacy,” Winn said. “We have an power dampener that we could use against him, but the range on its own wouldn’t cover the full extent of the alien’s powers.”

“So we thought that perhaps creating a power dampening compound that can be scattershot over a wide area without alarming the public would be more effective,” Brainy contributed.

“Hence, fireworks.” Winn grins back at her, and Alex fights the urge to pinch the bridge of her nose. It’s not that she doesn’t appreciate the ingenuity, but she can’t help but wonder if she made a mistake by introducing the two of them when the Legion ship was found.

“I think that is a terrible plan.”

“The National City Fourth of July display would be the perfect opportunity,” Brainy points out.

“Okay, say that we get the mayor to agree to this—is this power dampening compound specific to this alien’s physiology? Because if it isn’t, you risk shutting off the powers of many innocent aliens in the area, and if it is, you risk shutting off the powers of aliens of the same species who have done nothing wrong.”

Winn’s brow furrows. “We hadn’t gotten that far.”

“Really?” She looks over at Brainy with an amused expression. “That didn’t factor into your calculations?”

“I was more inclined to think that Supergirl would lure him out into an isolated area where we could launch our attack. That way, no innocent aliens would be involved in the attack, but the fireworks would blend in with the existing displays.”

At that, Alex pauses, considering. “Okay, that… isn’t actually a bad plan.”

Winn’s face lights up again. “So we get the fireworks?”

Alex holds up a finger. “Wait, I didn’t say that. We should probably loop in Supergirl first and make sure that—”

“Loop Supergirl in on what?” Kara appears in the doorway. Curse her super hearing. Alex takes a breath before turning to face her sister.

“Winn and Brainy—”

“Want to use fireworks laced with power dampeners to reduce the alien’s area of effect so that we can get the drop on it before it can use its powers?”

Kara’s face brightens as she looks at her sister. “Cool.”

Alex sighs. “I haven’t approved it yet. We haven’t run all the variables.”

“So it’s just an idea. Nothing wrong with testing it, right?” Kara tips her head to the side.

Alex knows she’s already fighting a losing battle. She rubs her eyes before holding up a finger. “Fine. You get a couple of fireworks to test your theory. But not a cart. Got it?”

Winn grins at her, wide and bright, and she has to resist the urge to smile back. She doesn’t want to encourage him. “Thanks boss. You won’t regret it.”

Alex sighs as she watches Winn, Brainy and Kara gather their things to leave the room, and gives in to the urge to pinch the bridge of her nose. “Trust me, I already do.”
