Fandom: Criminal Minds
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 - implied physical and/or mental abuse of a victim

Word Count: 616
Summary: JJ and Spence are on the hunt.

JJ held her torch and gun so the light beam and the gun barrell were locked in the same direction. She moved swiftly but carefully down the shadowy passageway, listening intently for any signs of movement ahead. A few steps behind her, Spence followed, mirroring her stance and attitude.

It was late in the evening, and the power to the abandoned warehouse had long since been cut off. The building was in a considerable state of disrepair, and the recent wet weather wasn’t helping in any way. The walls of the corridor were slick with water, and the smell of damp was very strong. Piles of soggy refuse made the footing treacherous, adding dangerous distractions to their progress and alertness.

JJ knew the rest of the team was en route and would arrive within minutes, but she and Spence had decided they couldn’t wait for back-up. A trail of clues in the hunt for a missing woman had led them there, and the victim’s continued survival might depend on their quick action. Two bodies had already been found, and JJ was determined to do everything in her power to prevent a third being added to that number. A drip from above landed on her head and slid down the side of her face. JJ tossed her hair over her shoulder in annoyance, and forged on into the darkness.

The difficulty with a building like this was that its size and unknown layout meant it was almost impossible to clear in a methodical way. They could check multiple areas and still not be sure there wasn’t someone lurking elsewhere, waiting for the chance to ambush them. With Spence at her back, though, JJ moved forward with confidence, secure in the knowledge that her team-mate would be watching her back.

After a few more steps, the passageway opened out into a large room, partially obscured by heavy machinery and tall shelving units. JJ looked back briefly, meeting Spence’s gaze. She motioned for him to break off to the left, indicating that she would take a route through the centre of the space. That way, they could cover more ground, while at the same time cutting down on potential directions of attack. Spence nodded grimly, and took off in his assigned direction.

JJ moved forwards cautiously, looking all around her, and even above her, ready in case an unseen assailant should suddenly appear. There was no sign of anyone, however, and the only sounds she could hear were Spence’s footsteps getting further away. She turned a corner, around a shelving unit, and was confronted with a wholly unexpected sight.

In the middle of an empty area, a wooden chair had been placed, and there was a woman sitting upon it. Her long hair was bedraggled and dirty, obscuring her face slightly, but JJ recognised her as the woman they had been seeking for the past two days. She was wrapped in a bright red blanket, the vividness of the colour in JJ’s torch beam entirely incongruous in the dingy surroundings.

JJ stepped closer, still on the lookout for a potential trap, but nobody jumped out of the shadows to suprise her. When she was only a short distance away, she reached out towards the woman’s neck to feel for a pulse. It was faint, but it was there; she was still alive. Her eyes were wide, and stared out at nothing, though, and she made no reaction to JJ’s presence or touch.

A piece of string was wrapped around the woman’s neck, and from it dangled a torn square of paper. In thick, black capital letters, a message stood out in stark relief against the white paper:

HANDLE WITH CARE

I like the atmosphere and tension you build here with the search, it's all very visual. Also like the open ending, leaving the reader wondering what will happen next.
