Summary: Kamala gets the call for help from her idols.

Kamala is standing in front of Captain Marvel and Photon.

Captain Marvel and Photon.

She might die. Literally, she might fall to the ground dead right this second, which would not do because if they’re coming to her for a team up, she can’t help if she’s dead. Regardless, though, she’s very excited and as Monica and Carol look at her, she can tell that she’s going to have to prove herself a bit. But if they’re here, that means she at least has some kind of reputation, right?

“Night-Light—” Carol begins, and Kamala immediately cuts her off.

“Actually I’m in the process of rebranding. It’s a terrible name, I know it’s terrible. It’s just what people started calling me.”

The corner of the blond woman’s mouth comes up in a little quirk, and she shrugs. “I don’t think any of us get to name ourselves, kid. Par for the course.”

“Wait. You didn’t call yourself Captain Marvel?”

“No, that was a name given to me by my best friend. Which is probably why it’s works so well, but I didn’t pick it.” Monica is turning her skeptical look on Carol and Carol sobers. “Which is not why we’re here. We can talk about it later, after we finish the mission.”

Right. They’re here on official Avengers business. Time to be serious.

“Right. What do you need?”

“How do your powers work, exactly?” Monica asks, crossing her arms in front of her chest. “Is it all light manipulation, or are you creating actual solid constructs?”

“Oh, they’re real.” She quickly summons one platform she uses to travel through the air, allowing the two other women to examine it. “Part of it extends my imagination, and part of it is djinn magic.”

“What’s a djinn?”

“Kind of like a genie?” Monica offers. “But also not really. Some cultures believe them to be demons.”

“Huh.” Carol regards Kamala again. “Nah, she’s too cheery to be a demon.”

Monica rolls her eyes, but Kamala beams. “Actually, my great-grandmother was a trans-dimensional creature that people just mistook for djinn. Or that’s where the stories came from. They’re from a world called Noor?”

Carol snaps her fingers. “That I’ve heard of. Interesting.”

Captain Marvel has heard of the Noor. She really is that cool. Taking a deep breath, she tries to stay on topic. She wants to make sure that she can prove her hero cred. “So. What’s the mission?”

“We need to get into a facility that is trying to build faster than light technology and make sure it’s not another Kree infiltration.” Carol says simply. “The last one was more friend than foe, but there’s no saying that this one won’t be the same.”

“And you’re coming to me?” Kamala asks, then she clears her throat and straightens. “Not that I don’t think I can handle it because I totally can. It’s not like its rocket science.”

Monica smirks. “Actually, it kinda is.”

“Right. The rocket ships are. But getting into the facility shouldn’t be. I guess…you’re both two badass totally capable women who have a whole stable of Avengers at their disposal, so…why me?”

“Well.” Monica takes a breath. “Your powers run on a wavelength that’s almost close to magic. Carol and I both give off Infinity stone vibes because they made us, and the Kree is prepared for that. I had a friend who I thought could help but …” She pauses, and almost looks remorseful. “Well, let’s just say she’s not available. And that neither of us trust Stephen Strange is one of the few things we could actually agree on.”

“We know you’re a kid, and we’re asking a lot of you.” Carol interjects. She doesn’t say it to be dismissive. Kamala knows that much. But she sounds like if she had other options, she wouldn’t be asking a teenager.

That’s fair. Kamala knows she’s a kid, as much as she wants to be a superhero. But it stings a little that they’re choosing her because they don’t have better options.

Kamala asked, though.

“I get it. But I can do this.” Kamala straightens with a smile. “I won’t let you down.”

“I know you can,” Carol nods. “But…you also don’t have to say yes just because it’s me.”

Oh.

It really is her choice, isn’t it?

“I started doing this because I wanted to help people. And if the Kree are bad, then I want to stop them. I trust your judgement.”

Carol nods, placing a hand on her shoulder gently and giving it a small squeeze. “Thank you.” Then she turns back to Monica. “We keep her off both Talos and Fury’s radars. Agreed.”

Monica nods. “I think that’s another thing we can both agree on.”

“Good.” Carol smiles before nodding to the car. “Okay. Let’s do this.”

Kamala's fist pumps in the air after the women turn their backs and gleefully follows them to the car.

Best. Team-up. Ever.
