[#152] THE FAMILY SKELETON (STAR WARS)
Theme Prompt: #152 - Honesty
Title: The Family Skeleton
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating / Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: No
Word Count: 383
Summary: Ben tells Luke the truth about his father on Tatooine
On Tatooine, when Luke hesitantly asks him how his father died, Ben is tempted to lie. To say that his father was betrayed and murdered by Darth Vader. It would even be partly true.
But Luke's destiny lies off-world and danger will come with it. Lies told now will surely leave Luke vulnerable at the wrong time. That would be betrayal, too.
Ben sighed.
"I've been carrying this secret from you until now. Your father was turned to the Dark Side by a Sith Lord who became the Emperor. In a way, your father did die once he became the Emperor's enforcer, Darth Vader. You were brought here for your own safety after your mother passed away."
He won't mention Leia right now. That will be for later.
Luke flinched and drew back in shock. Even here, he has heard of the Emperor's cruelties and that of his feared enforcer. One of his friends had a cousin in Mos Eisley who would pass on news.
"He's alive... he's been Darth Vader all my life?" Luke floundered, his face white. "Why... why?"
His last word comes out almost as a scream.
"The Dark Side promises much but leaves you only ashes of the person you used to be. I tried to stop Anakin, but I failed. He was like a brother to me," Ben said heavily, bowing his head.
Luke's anger and outrage at being left in the dark all these years falters somewhat in the face of Ben's obvious grief. He thinks too of the times he would ask his uncle or aunt stories about his father, and sometimes see a flicker of fear in their eyes. All those times his uncle had made excuses to keep Luke from going off-world, that had been made out of fear too.
Fear of his father out there. They had tried to keep him safe.
***************
By the time Luke goes with Ben to Mos Eisley to book passage off-world, he's decided to change his surname. It had been part of one of his original escape plans anyway if he ever got off Tatooine. Ben doesn't argue much, though a look of regret is on his face.
He's Luke Sunstar now, his old (dangerous now) surname left behind like a rock in the deserts of Tatooine.
