[#156] John 1:8-10 (Leap Of Faith [1992])
Theme Prompt: #156 - Leap of Faith
Title: John 1:8-10
Fandom: Leap Of Faith (1992)
Rating/Warnings: gen | movie typical treating of religion
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 758
Summary: Jonas Nightengale is once more on a tour across the county to visit 'sinners'
AN: Wow, a non-TF ficlet for this community. It was nice to write something completely different. I saw the prompt and knew right on the spot, that I had to write for this movie. It's one of the few movies that made a lasting impact on me.
Didn't had one version of the bible at hand for the quotes used in this, so they come from various sources.
They were on the road again, heading towards another city in a different state. His audience would be the same like in all the places before and the following ones on the current tour.
Sinners. Every single one of the was a sinner through and through, hoping that he would wash them off their sins, all while they were emptying their pockets, throwing their hard-earned money at him.
The truck rolled over the highway mile after mile. Jonas threw a quick glance out of the window. In the dark of the night he only saw the lights of the bypassing vehicles. He reached for one of the newspapers, flipped through them but threw it with a swift movement of his wrist back on the table.
Old news from yesterday, mostly dealing with the events which had taken place in a city he wouldn’t visit again anytime soon. It didn’t mattered, what mattered was, that he had given hundreds of sinners a chance to continue their lives with a clean consciousness, now that he had taken the weight of their sins from the shoulders. It was definitely helpful for a sin-free live to have a lighter pocket as well.
‘I bet with these shows I’ll silence some of the critiques.’ Jonas thought with a smirk on his face. He was thinking about how he could pimp his show once the tour was over and done. Money was there and he wanted the next tour to be even more spectacular.
Soon the end of the tour, which would be in Texas, would surely cause the newspapers all across the country to be filled with articles about him and his show.
The new day began to dawn and they’d reached the town in time. His driver was a blessing, Jonas thought while he sat in one of the small diners, having a cup of coffee and a bagel for breakfast. There weren’t many people in the diner. He spotted some truckers, a group of students and a group of workers. The atmosphere was everywhere the same, not that this was a bad thing.
Silently he scanned everyone present, wondering how many of them he would see tonight in the tent.
Several days, hundreds of miles later, the sun rises once more and a new day dawns in Texas.
The truck rolls into the parking lot. Jonas draws back the curtains. Somehow hes got the impression that this day is not like any other day on this tour. He shook his head, laughing about himself. Of course this was a special day: today was the grand finale of the tour.
Lots of Texans and people who had traveled here would not only witness miracles and be free of sins at the end of the day. Their faith would be stronger, which would lead them to looking forward to the day when he would return.
A new days meant new hopes but the bright sun light would also illuminate everything which wasn’t as perfect as someone pretends it is.
Jonas believed that it would be a good day and an even better night for him.
The sunset colored the sky in bright yellow and orange as if a wild fire was raging on the horizon.
>>I will completely remove all things
From the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.<<
Jonas shivers, as the beginning of the verse Zephaniah 1:2-4 crosses his mind. He ran a hand through his hair, exhaled deeply and tried not to think too much about the verse.
‘As if the world is going to end today.’ He even dared to laugh.
‘Fire will cleanse the soul.’ That was a much better thought and Jonas liked the metaphor of the cleansing fire.
>>For the purification of the unclean person, take some of the ashes of the burnt sin offering, put them in a jar, and pour fresh water over them.<<
Numbers 19:17, if he wasn’t mistaken.
Should he do something similar on the next tour? It was an idea he should keep in the back of his head.
Jonas looked at his face in mirror, as he got ready for the show. Just like in every show there were probably people in the audience who had lost their faith and some loved one had decided to drag them to one of his revivals to help them find back what they had lost.
To be a believer requires courage and giving himself to the Lord probably scared some people but Jonas was here tonight, offering a helping hand along with some miracles.

If you're interested the movie can be found in full length on YouTube.
He's a faith healer who puts on really spectacular shows but blinds people as well.
And yet you just have to like him.

Yes, that's really a fishy thing to do and it's scary how many people fall for such 'preachers' who misuse the faith of people.
Yet, since we don't have anything like that here, it's interesting that this is something more or less accepted.
