[#160] I’ve Come to You ‘Cause I Need Guidance to be True (Haven)
Theme Prompt: #160–Innocence
Title: I’ve Come to You ‘Cause I Need Guidance to be True
Fandom: Haven
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 925
Summary: Duke tries to convince Audrey he didn’t commit the crime.
“Audrey, you know I didn’t do this.”
Audrey sits across the table from Duke, staring him down as she tries to figure out what to do next. He’s not wrong, that she knows something is off. Something has been strange since this case landed on her desk. But given that the evidence at this point is overwhelming, she doesn’t know that she can take him at his word.
“Do I?” she asks in return, nudging the laptop forward to give him a glimpse of the security footage from the store. The clip that showed someone who on any other day she would have guessed was definitely Duke Crocker, shooting up one of the local stores. But that it’s a very un-Duke like crime has her second guessing, which is why she brought him in for questioning before showing it to Nathan. “Because that definitely looks like you, Duke.”
She watches as the color drains from his face as he takes it all in, realizing not only the implications of what was done, but that it was done with his face on top of it.
“C’mon, Audrey, I know you haven’t been here long, but you know me.” He’s desperate for her to believe him, and it reads as genuine. “I’ve never been a saint, but I didn’t do this.”
“Do you have an alibi for this morning?”
“Yes! Yes, I do.” He reaches for the pad in front of him and scribbles down the name and number, likely of the woman he was with last night. Calling on a one-night stand to be your alibi is risky, but she has a feeling that Duke doesn’t leave his partners in a position not to vouch for him. “Callie will tell you I was with her until at least noon.”
“Alright,” she nods. “Give me a sec to check this, and I’ll get back to you.”
Duke nods, before leaning back in his seat. “Audrey, has Nathan seen this?”
“Not yet. But eventually he will, so we better find a solution to this fast.”
The door to the interrogation room slams open, and Nathan pokes his head in, looking directly at her. “Parker, we gotta go. There’s been another robbery, and one witness said it was—” His voice cuts off when he sees the man sitting across from her and he frowns. “—Duke.”
“Duke’s been with me for at least an hour. If the robbery just happened, it couldn’t have been him, and he claims he has an alibi for this morning.”
There’s a moment of flickering conflict across Nathan’s face before he nods. “If he’s been with you, he couldn’t have committed this one—so why are the people there saying it’s him?”
“Maybe we have a Troubled situation on our hands?” Audrey offers, and Nathan nods.
“Alright, I’ll go collect witness statements and see what I can get. You stay with Duke. If this guy is getting brazen, we need a solid alibi from someone the Troubles can’t mess with.”
“Deal. We’ll head back to the boat and lie low. Let us know what you find.”
Duke makes a face. “So what? I just get to be on house arrest until Nathan does all the fun stuff?”
“Oh, not just house arrest. I get to ask you all kinds of fun questions about who might want to frame you for murder.”
Duke huffs as he gets up to follow Audrey out of the police station. “Great. Just what I wanted to do with my afternoon.”

Duke, to his credit, is the perfect gentleman about having an awkward police officer on his boat. As time stretches on and they go through his list of many, many enemies, he gets up and goes to prepare them both something for dinner.
“You weren’t kidding when you said you weren’t a saint.”
“I thought you already knew and begrudgingly appreciated that about me,” he teases, and she laughs.
“I did. But did you ever think that someone who makes that many enemies might want to consider his line of work?”
“I might.” He moves to put one plate down in front of her before offering a smile. “If my friends did not vastly outweigh the number.”
“And which side of the scale does Nathan land on?”
“Depends on if it’s a good or bad day,” Duke shrugs. “He likes to be the big bad police officer, but I think he trusts me a lot more than he lets on. He just has to come hassle me first, because if he didn’t, he wouldn’t know what to do with himself.”
“I think he also envies you too,” Audrey points out. “You have a lot of freedom that he doesn’t.”
“Well, I won’t tell him you said that,” Duke grins.
She laughs as she leans forward to take a bite of the plate in front of her before letting out a sound of surprise. “This is delicious.”
“Thank you.”
She’s about to press him further about where he learned when her radio crackles. “Parker? We got ‘em.”
“Got it. Thanks, Nathan.” Audrey leans back with a sigh. “Looks like your name is in the clear.”
“Looks like,” Duke smiles. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t finish dinner. And, since you’re now off the clock, you can have wine.”
“And leave Nathan with all the paperwork?”
“I think whatever’s there can wait until morning, can’t you?” he smirks. “C’mon, Audrey. Live a little.”
She hesitates, before nodding her agreement. “You’re right. One drink won’t hurt.”
