Title: Such a Lonely Word

Summary: Dean tries to come clean to Cassie.
“There’s something I have to tell you.”
Dean doesn’t realize he’s saying the words until they’re halfway out of his mouth. An impulse he wishes he could have squashed, giving him enough plausible deniability to chicken out without it, making him feel like he has to lie to her. Usually, Dean doesn’t care about lying. He does it all day, every day, to people that don’t matter and even occasionally to himself. But he doesn’t enjoy lying to Cassie when he can help it.
(If he understood what being in love meant, he might have realized what this is sooner. But Dean doesn’t and after this probably never will.)
Cassie turns on him, brow furrowing in confusion. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah.” No. “I just—I gotta go out of town for a few days. My dad needs help on a job.”
“Okay.” Cassie still seems confused. “You’ll be back, though. So hardly a need for the dramatics.” She pauses, as a moment of unease sinks in. “Unless you’re not coming back.”
“No! No, this isn’t. It’s not that kind of talk.” His thumb picks at the label of his beer bottle. He let the genie out of the bottle. Now he’s got to put it back in, and in a way that doesn’t make Cassie hate him. “I just … I think there’s something I should tell you. About my job.”
“Oh-kay.” She steps closer, moving to sit next to him. “What did you want to tell me?”
This is it, Dean. This is when you do it and she either laughs in your face or freaks out. But in some ways, it needs to be done. So he takes a deep breath and spits it out. “I hunt monsters.”
She does laugh at first. It’s a common first reaction, so he doesn’t blame her. But then he watches as it sets in that he’s serious, and that laughter changes into something between shock and anger.
“Are you kidding me?”
“No.”
“Monsters. Like what? Werewolves? Vampires?”
“Sometimes.”
The incredulous look on her face isn’t fading, and he immediately knows that things are going south. There’s no other way around it. He’s been seeing this girl for a few weeks and he opens his mouth about this? Stupid.
Cassie’s eyes are sharp as she scans his face, looking for signs that he doesn’t understand. He doesn’t know what it’s like to live in the real world, in this space where you ignore the things that don’t fit with the rest of the world. And then she shakes her head and gets to her feet, walking away from him.
“Get out.”
“What?”
“I said, get out. What was there to misunderstand about it?”
Dean grits his teeth, but Dean Winchester always gives as good as he gets. “So, what? I open up to you, like you’ve been trying to get me to do for weeks, and this happens?”
“Is this what you call opening up to me?” She seems baffled and shakes her head. “Making up some story about how you and your dad are hunting monsters? And that’s the family business? Are you insane?”
“Well, this is my life, Cassie. I don’t know what else you want me to say to you.”
“I don’t want you to say anything. I just want you to get out and I never want to see you again.”
Dean makes a frustrated noise, but does as she asks, turning to gather the rest of his things and heading out the door. “You’re unbelievable.”
“I’m unbelievable? You make decisions, you have to live with the consequences.”
He makes a gesture he’s not proud of in the moment, before slamming the door behind him. After storming out of her dorm room and down to his car, he slides into the front seat, before slamming his fist into the steering wheel, frustration coursing through him.
So this being honest gets you? So much for that shit. He’d rather stick with something that doesn’t hurt nearly as much, because while lying isn’t exactly favored, at least he doesn’t leave situations feeling like this.
