Rating/Warnings: PG-13

Word Count: 542
Summary: Freya and Kol help Hope learn memory walking.

“Don’t worry. It’s just a memory.”

Hope isn’t sure she finds that very comforting, given that she and Freya are wandering through her uncle’s memories, and at any moment she might stumble into something she’s not sure she wants to see. She knows she has to practice, and this kind of memory magic isn’t easy to get right, but the long corridor of doors just seems intimidating, including the door she is standing in front of.

“I know,” Hope sighs. “But this is Uncle Kol. There’s a thousand years of memories in here. Who knows what we’re walking into?”

“I made him promise to keep things teenage niece friendly. But navigating memories is a tricky skill and one you should get practice in. And it’s one that they won’t teach you at school.”

The promise is a comfort, and she nods. Stepping forward, she places her hand on the door handle and turns. Inside is her family, dressed to the nines in clothing for the era, all gathered around a bonfire. There are playful jabs between the four of them, as they all write their wishes down on small scraps of paper, and prepare to toss them into the fire. It’s a happy memory, likely mired in a sea of terrible ones, and she glances back to Freya with a smile.

“Good to see some things never change.”

“Indeed.” Freya’s eyes are on the party at hand, watching the four of them as they enjoy a moment of peace with each other, and Hope can see that being here is bittersweet. As much as Freya has her siblings now, she missed so much time in between. Hope takes her hand, leading her back towards the door again and into the main hallway.

“Are all memories set up like this? Like, will there always be a hallway and doors?”

Freya shrugs. “It depends on how well you set up the spell, and what other forces are at play. I like the doors and hallway because it makes it easier to navigate. But if someone is working against you finding what you’re looking for, things could be more chaotic.”

“So be ready for anything?” Hope smirks and Freya nods.

“Always.”

Hope glances back over her shoulder to the door they’re leaving behind, before turning back to her aunt. “Do you ever wish that things could have been different?” She hesitates as she tries to figure out how to rephrase it. “That you could have all the time with them they have together?”

“I missed so much of their lives that it’s hard not to wish for that.” Freya admits. “I missed a lot of the world, too. But if I had, I might not have gotten to have these milestones with you instead. And personally, I find that just as valuable, if not more.”

Hope smiles as she leans into her aunt, and they continue wandering down the hallway. “I’m pretty sure he hid anything absolutely embarrassing from us.”

“For himself, yes.” Freya smirks. “But I’m willing to bet that there’s some that are absolutely embarrassing for other people. Like perhaps your father?”

Hope pauses before she can’t help but grin. “Think we can find one?”

Freya laughs. “Only one way to find out.”
