Summary: Penny gets sick. Arven's the only one available.

It goes better than she expects.

"I don't feel so good."

This was bad. She'd missed too many classes between hiding from her bullies and running Operation Starfall, she couldn't afford to miss more. But her head hurt, her nose was stuffed up, and her throat was scratchy.

Maybe if she ate something, or took a shower. But the second she tried to get out of bed her body screamed at her to stop and she flopped face-down into her pillow.

It was damp. Sweaty. Suddenly she felt too hot, when just moments ago she'd been shivering.

This was very bad. What if it's the flu? I'll be out for days, I'll never graduate! She wasn't as bad off as Arven had been, but she knew she was cutting it close. Plus, she had her job with the League now; sure, Geeta would understand if she had to stay in, but she owed them so much after the hacking she did.

Trying to get up again only resulted in her stomach lurching, even though she didn't feel nauseous. Yeah, there was no way she was going to make it to class today. With a shaking hand, Penny grabbed her phone and hit the AZ crew. (Juliana's idea.)

No answer from Nemona, who was probably training somewhere. Juliana answered only to tell her the bell was about to ring, could it wait?

Penny? what's up?

She'd gotten to know Arven a decent amount on their trek to Area Zero, but compared to her undying trust in Juliana and her...unique bond with Nemona, she didn't feel quite as close to him. Then again, he tended to keep everyone but Juliana and Mabosstiff at arms' length.

It occurred to her that she could have texted Team Star. But they were busy too, making up classes and running the Star Training centers.

Arven answered, so Arven it was.

sick. everything hurts.

He didn't answer, because in less than a minute he was knocking at the door.

"It's open," she muttered. She heard him stumbling around, Flareon squeaking angrily, him swearing, a series of uneven footsteps and finally something being put down on the counter. By the time she managed to lift her head without worrying she'd pass out, he was putting a pot on the stove.

"I hope soup from a can is okay, I didn't have time to make fresh stock," he said. "I can clean up a little, too, if you want." Penny groaned.

"How'd you get here so fast with all that stuff?"

"Mabosstiff's a lot quicker than he looks," Arven said. "And before you ask, I don't have my first class till this afternoon. I've got a while." She opened her mouth to respond, only to sneeze. Loud and messy, her nightshirt sleeve just barely catching it.

He tossed a box of tissues onto the bed.

"Thanks," she muttered. "And um, thanks for coming." He brought her the soup, a glass of water, and a box of cold tablets. She didn't have the heart to tell him she wasn't sure she could swallow pills at the moment. He sat down at the foot of the bed, after checking to see that an Eeveelution wasn't already sleeping there.

(Flareon was still in the corner, glaring at him and licking her paws.)

"You and I don't hang out a lot, and I felt kinda bad about that," Arven said. "I mean, you were at Area Zero, you made sure we got my favorite snacks on the way home, you helped keep me distracted by going on about your favorite anime..." She'd been way out of her depth, feeling guilty for complaining about her father earlier while Arven just lost his mom all over again. She couldn't think of anything else to do.

"So you came into my messy room to feed me soup and be my housekeeper?"

"And keep you company," he said. "For a few hours, anyway. But after I finish with my classes I'll come back to check on you, if you want."

He'd been her last resort, because she assumed they weren't really friends. He was here, with supplies, because he wanted to be, and if he knew he was a last resort he didn't seem to hold it against her. Penny managed a tiny smile.

"Thanks, Arven. I'd like that."

"Good." He patted her shoulder. "Eat your soup. I'm going to see if I can't organize some of your stuff."

Sometimes you don't know someone is a friend until you need them. Sweet.
