“Look, I’ll tell her. Terry, I promise, I’ll tell her. Just give me a little time.”

Terry and Julian have been best friends since they were six. He was the best man at his and Lily’s wedding. He knows that when his best friend gives him his word, he should trust it. But he didn’t think his best friend would cheat on his wife, either.

He thinks back on the past few months. Lily getting increasingly more unhinged in her demands. Claiming that Julian was up to something or messing with her somehow, and how many times Terry himself told her she was being crazy. The further his feet tread from the small neighborhood where Julian and his wife live, Sandy running ahead of him on the leash, the more something about this doesn’t feel right and he knows he has to do this himself.

He has his own apologies to make, and he also knows that he can’t wait on Julian to make this right.

Lily’s law office isn’t that far from their house. She likes to walk to work when the weather’s nice and she has the time, so before long, Terry and Sandy round the corner, and he places his phone to his ear to call her.

“Lily Danvers.”

“Hey, Lil. It’s Terry, I’m outside with Sandy. I know this is kind of out of the blue, but could you come down to talk?”

He can hear the heavy sigh. She probably is glancing at the clock on her computer, trying to figure out if she has any time to give him. “I really don’t have time for this, Terry. Can we talk another time?”

“No, because if I don’t get this out now, I’ll probably lose my nerve, so please?” He turns to look at what he can use around him, and his eyes land on one of the food trucks pulling up for the lunch service. “I’ll buy you a gyro.”

She probably won’t want to eat it. She’ll probably just throw it at him once he gets through what he has to say, but at least she’ll come down if she thinks she’ll have time to eat.

“Fine, fine! Just give me ten minutes.”

Terry hangs up and gets in line for the gyros. He orders two—one for him, one for her—and a dog-safe version for Sandy, which essentially amounts to a couple chunks of unseasoned meat cooked on a clean portion of the grill. Lily arrives a few minutes later, giving the dog a smile first as he greets her, before taking her gyro from Terry.

“Whatever this is, better be important.”

“It is.”

“So?” She sits on the bench next to him before gesturing with her hand. “Out with it.”

Terry takes a deep breath, lets her chew, then swallow the bite she takes of her lunch before saying. “Julian’s cheating on you.”

Her gyro stops its path to her mouth, and she looks up at him, jaw set. “How do you know?”

“I went to pick up Sandy for a walk during the middle of the day like I usually do, and his car was in the driveway. I didn’t think it was that weird, because maybe he was working from home or whatever. Then I went inside and … yeah.”

“You thought I was crazy.”

“I did. I didn’t think—” He shakes his head. “Doesn’t matter. I’m sorry about that. I should have listened to you and I didn’t.”

Lily nods, and he thinks she’s being overly calm about this. But he’s also known Lily long enough that showing emotion in public isn’t one of her favorite things to do. He can also see the way her hands are shaking around the gyro she’s gripping tightly on her hands.

“Does he know you’re telling me?”

“No. In fact, I told him I’d let him tell you first, but … something felt like I couldn’t trust him to do that, so.” Here he is. Betraying the bro code so that he can keep his own conscience clear. He’s such a shitty friend.

Lily, almost as though she’s reading his mind, reaches forward and puts her hand on his arm. “I appreciate you being a good friend to me.”

Terry nods. “Sorry for ruining your lunch.”

Lily shakes her head. “Honestly? When you see it coming, it’s just—relief. At least I’m not losing my mind.” There’s a pause as she looks over and her cheeks turn red. “But I think we’re out of time.”

Terry turns, and he sees Julian’s car screeching to a stop in the parking lot, and he’s flying out of the car, almost as though he realized that his best friend couldn’t be trusted.

“You should go,” Lily nods. “Take Sandy home.”

“Are you sure?”

“I can handle him. Promise.”

Terry nods, before getting to his feet and heading back the way he came. On the way, he passes Julian, and the other man grips him by the arm.

“What did you do?”

Terry shrugs. “What you weren’t going to.”
