[#176] Space for Judgement (MDZS)

.

Theme Prompt: #179 - Space
Title: Space for Judgement
Fandom: MDZS
Rating/Warnings: 17+ / Alcohol
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 656
Summary: Nie Huaisang unveils the theme of his show. Jiang Cheng is not impressed.

Jiang Cheng had been in residence at Nie Manor for three days and on Nie Huaisang’s payroll for six hours, with the paperwork locked in the safe in Mingjue-ge’s study, before he thought to ask what the concept of the show was. He instantly became suspicious when his friend laughed. They were sitting pool-side, soaking in a final day of relaxation before the work began.

Nie Huaisang made a great show of setting down his drink, then raising his hands in front of his face. He spread them apart as if revealing something amazing, giving Jiang Cheng a dazzling smile.

“Space!”

Jiang Cheng groaned. He gave serious consideration to drowning himself in the pool.

“Space,” he repeated, hoping against hope. “Like … taking up space? On a train.”

Nie Huaisang made the hand gesture again, smiling even wider and batting his eyelashes for emphasis. “Outer! Space!”

“Of all the cliche bullsh- Huaisang, I am not going to help you dress innocent people up as martians and astronauts and pass it off as fashion to a bunch of idiots with more money than sense!”

Huaisang had rolled off the far side of his lounge chair and was rolling around the paved surface, laughing. Jiang Cheng threw a cushion but knew he missed since he couldn’t even see Huaisang. The laughter didn’t so much as pause.

Daffodil, who had been in raptures running around the pool as if it needed to be herded just two inches to the left, immediately descended upon Huaisang, covering his face in concerned doggy kisses. Jiang Cheng had the supreme delight of hearing him gag.

“Daffodil! Your tongue does not go in my mouth!” Huaisang squawked, trying to shove her off.

He sat up, head poking up where Jiang Cheng could see, wiping his tongue on cover-up he was wearing. “Your dog has terrible breath,” he announced, with all the dignity he could muster.

The next cushion caught him square in the face and he went right back down, to Daffodil’s delight.

“What are you going to do? Some kind of count the stars nonsense?” Jiang Cheng scoffed, pinching the bridge of his nose in the anticipation of pain. “Each model represents a constellation or something? Some historical incorporation? You just love any reason to shove Chinese history down an audience’s throat.”

“It was - augh, Daffodil no! -ptttew!- it was my minor, Jiang Cheng! Besides,” Nie Huaisang reappeared, disheveled and drooled on.

Daffodil scampered away and sought protection from Jiang Cheng, hopping up on the foot of his lounge chair and flopping down theatrically as if she’d been there the entire time. Jiang Cheng could not help but reach down to rub her ears. She was such a good girl.

“You have to admit that anything I come up with will be more interesting than most of the utter garbage that shows up at the Met Gala.” Huaisang got to his feet and brushed himself off before reclaiming his own lounge chair. “And the constellation thing is a great idea! I’m stealing it. No take-backs!”

“How did you end up with something so … cliché?” Jiang Cheng had to know. Or he was going to puke in Nie Huaisang’s very nice pool. “Usually you have a whole vibe. Something you want your clothing to achieve. Some gender-blending functionality. What the heck does space have to do with that?”

Nie Huaisang sighed, refusing to make eye contact. He put on a huge pair of shades, in fact, and picked up his drink again. “I just feel like up there, there’s less rules. Less judgement and drama,” he admitted after a moment. “Less … first world problems.”

“Well that can’t really be argued.” Jiang Cheng sighed. “I can’t wait to see what we’re working with tomorrow.”

“Hahaha,” Nie Huaisang laughed very convincingly.

Jiang Cheng got up and got himself another drink.

The things he did for friends.

I'm sure the fashions will be splendid. Space is very inspirational.
