Challenge 177: NEMESIS

What is a nemesis, really? The dictionary defines it as either “one who inflicts retribution or vengeance”, or “a formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent”, but a nemesis can be so much more than that. They can be our protagonist’s oldest friend, someone they once loved and trusted who’s become their worst enemy. They can be a foil to the protagonist, someone who parallels and contrasts their journey, or even a kind of mentor, someone our protagonist looks up to even while they compete with them. Even if a nemesis didn’t start out as a friend, sometimes they can become one in the end – but other nemeses will only be satisfied with total victory or defeat. Does your character have a nemesis? Do they want one? Is there someone they think is their nemesis, who doesn’t actually think of themselves that way? Write a story about a nemesis. BONUS GOAL: “Looks like it’s just you and me.” If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!
