Jim Comes Undone
Rafe walked into the bullpen laughing and said, “Hey, Sandburg, did you go down and visit your partner in holding?”
“He’s in court, Rafe, what are you talking about?”
“The judge got pissed and put him in contempt of court. He has to stay there for a day and night and then go back and tell the jury again without yelling tomorrow afternoon. He’s pissed.”
“The judge or Jim?” Blair asked.
“Jim. Man, he was ready to spit bullets. He can’t believe he’s in there all night long.”
“I can’t believe he’s in there all night long. I’m going to give him hell, let me tell ya.” All Blair could think about was sleeping alone. He and Jim were an item and they had not slept apart in 8 months. Now, because Jim couldn’t hold his tongue, they would sleep apart.
Rafe said, “Let him cool down before you see him, Sandburg. He might come through the cell to get you. He was that pissed off.”
Blair went and knocked on Simon’s door. “Come in,” Simon barked.
“Sir, can I go downstairs to holding and kill my partner?”
“You already heard, huh? Sure, go down there but no killing him. We need him up here, pronto. He’s got to get control of that damn temper of his.”
“Honestly, I’m surprised it’s never happened before. He’s that bad while giving a testimony in court. I wonder if they’ll let me bring him dinner.”
“You can’t. He won’t learn if you did. Just let him stew and sleep with all the idiots down there and maybe he’ll think twice tomorrow about what he says on the stand.”
“You’re right. I’m going to check on him. I’ll be back in a flash.”
“Don’t feel sorry for him, Blair. He knows better then to act that way. And he also knows the rules.”
“I won’t baby him. He’ll be pissed about that, let me tell you.”
Simon laughed as Blair left the office. Simon suddenly felt bad for Jim. Blair looked madder than he had ever looked before.
********************
Jim was pacing in the cell. Well, as much as you could pace in a small area. He was so pissed at himself and now would have to spend the night in jail. It would be the first time he and Blair were separated. He knew that Blair was going to be pissed off. Jim tried to get control of himself before Blair came down to visit him. That is, if Blair wasn’t too angry. Usually, Blair didn’t have trouble with anger issues. Thank God for that.
Jim heard the elevator coming down and knew Blair was in it. His heartbeat was nice a steady, almost like Blair wasn’t mad at all. This calmed Jim to no end.
Blair talked to Miller, who was on that afternoon and said, “Can I talk to Jim Ellison?”
“Sure, go on back. But don’t get close to the bars. He was really pissed. I wouldn’t want to have to go in there to break you two up.”
“Don’t worry about me, man. Thanks.”
Blair walked back and passed two crowded cells and hoped Jim wasn’t in a crowded one. And he found Jim in a cell all by himself. Talk about lucky.
“Hi, Chief.” Jim tried to look sorry but it didn’t go all the way up to his eyes. Blair knew he didn’t mean it at all.
“Hi, yourself. What were you doing, Jim?”
“Don’t start. I already know it was stupid calling the judge a fathead. I didn’t mean to, it just slipped out.”
Blair whispered, Sentinel soft, “You called him that? What were you thinking? Oh, you weren’t thinking, of course, I should have known.”
“Just drop it, Blair. I know I screwed up and I intend to make the judge happy tomorrow, so don’t nag at me.”
Still whispering, Blair said, “I’m not going to nag you at all. You’re the idiot in jail, not me. I don’t have anger issues, but you sure as hell do. And look what you won. A free night in jail, without me. Wow, how do you top that, Jim?”
“I said, drop it, Blair.”
“What are you going to do, call me a fathead?”
“Don’t push me, Sandburg.”
“See you tomorrow,” Blair said, as he began to walk away.
“I’m sorry. I’ll shut up and listen. Just stay down here and talk to me, okay?”
“No, not okay, Jim. I don’t need this and I’m not going to put up with it, either. Have a good night’s sleep all alone tonight and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Chief, don’t make me beg…”
“Goodbye, Jim…”
And Jim knew his goose was cooked. Blair was angry, but unlike Jim, he controlled himself and didn’t think to call any one names. Ever. Jim realized he would have to kiss ass tomorrow to more than the judge. One of these days, Jim would realize this before he opened his big mouth.
