[#178] FOR BETTER AND FOR WORSE (EXILES SAGA & GALACTIC MILIEU)
Theme Prompt: #178 - Anger Management
Title: For Better and For Worse
Fandom: Exiles Saga and Galactic Milieu
Rating / Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: No
Word Count: 313
Summary: Being married to an immortal wasn't always good for Lucille's temper
Being married to a professor who had stopped aging in his twenties wasn't something for Lucille Remillard to feel awkward or angry about in the early years of their marriage. She was quite busy with their talented children as they came along, one by one. They could afford to have help around the house when it was needed, so that cut down on stress for her.
Lucille could afford too to look after her appearance, keep her shape and look good for the society dinners her husband Denis was invited to, the quality and importance increasing over time.
But eventually despite her best efforts - even resorting to cosmetic surgery - Lucille starts looking old enough to be the mother of Denis. Strangers start casually assuming this; they can't actually be married, surely?
Despite herself, she can feel anger start boiling up inside her at such insults. Dangerous anger, red hot. Hot enough to start actual fires again if she's not careful.
It's such a relief when regen technology is brought by the aliens who considered Earth good enough to visit at last. Maybe.
Denis brings it up in casual conversation one day, his bright blue gaze non-judgmental. But Lucille feels a pang of guilt; of course he had feelings about their different appearances these days. After decades of marriage he still looks like a floppy-haired grad student, after all.
Lucille's happy when she goes into the regen tank; it means though she missed the drama and chaos when she was out. Denis is pleased to see her again though later on and their reunion is loving. She's so glad to look and feel young again!
Embers of anger fading into ash, gone.
But that night she hears cruel laughter in her dreams, mocking her vanity. In the morning Lucille awakes, left only with the vague sense that something wrong is out there.
