[#179] FAKING IT The Heights We Go To (Guardian (TV 2018))
Rating/Warnings: PG, Language
“I know what I’m doing! I swear!” Guo Changcheng said, and he grabbed Chu Shuzhi’s hand and pulled him along.
They were at an amusement park, of all things, chasing a would-be bad guy.
While they were able to follow him for several minutes the crowds and general chaos eventually allowed the Dixingren to disappear.
And now Guo Changcheng was pulling Chu Shuzhi as if he knew where the rogue Dixingren was.
Before Chu Shuzhi could say anything more, he found himself (and Changcheng) bundled onto a ride, or more specifically, into a little enclosed pod. The pod rocked gently as they stepped inside.
The interior was brightly lit by multi-colored lights, and against the back wall there was a large enough seat to hold two people. The sides of the pod were simply two large windows, the plexiglass held within the frame allowing an unrestricted view outside.
Guo Changcheng pulled Chu Shuzhi over to the seat. “Come on and sit, Chu-ge. Hurry. The ride is going to start!”
“What the hell are we doing here?” Chu Shuzhi muttered, but sat, which caused the little pod to rock even more. He grimaced with the sway of it.
“The Ferris Wheel goes high, right?” Guo Changcheng said excitedly, even as the little door to their pod closed with a slam, a finality in that sound. “We can see the whole park. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see the Dixingren from up here.”
Chu Shuzhi frowned as he turned a baleful look out his window. “I suppose.” He relented, after all, it’d be no worse than running blindingly around the park. Perhaps the height would give them an advantage on locating the man.
With a sudden lurch the pod started to rise, and Chu Shuzhi felt his stomach flip as the Ferris Wheel began to move. Outside the ground dropped swiftly away.

Guo Changcheng almost had his face pressed to the window, so intent was he on looking for the man. They knew what the Dixingren was wearing, a red and white t-shirt, black pants, scuffed white tennis shoes, and while he could have tried to look for all those colors, he instead let his eyes pick out the pops of red.
So far, he located eight red shirts, but none of them had white.
Currently their pod was paused, as the Ferris Wheel driver shuffled people off and allowed more on, but Guo Changcheng knew soon it would start to slowly turn again.
“Oh, there’s one!” Guo Changcheng breathed more to himself than Chu-ge, but his words were loud enough for Chu Shuzhi to hear. “Oh wait, I think it has black stripes, not white. Darn.”
There was a sudden lurch to their pod, and it rocked back and forth quickly, as the Ferris Wheel started its slow crawl around. He watched the people below become even smaller to his eyes.
“Maybe this wasn’t a good idea.” Murmured Guo Changcheng just a little sadly. He really had thought this would be a great idea, but there was a chance it wasn’t.
While Chu Shuzhi tended toward the stoic silent type, Guo Changcheng realized the silence that hung in their little space felt different. It felt tense, on edge, like they were waiting for something to happen. It prompted Guo Changcheng to turn slightly, to look over at Chu-ge.
He found the other man staring resolutely out the window, which was normal, right? But something about it set little warning bells ringing in Guo Changcheng’s head. There was something about the set of Chu-ge’s shoulders that made Guo Changcheng think something was wrong.
When Guo Changcheng’s gaze dropped to Chu-ge’s lap, he found that Chu-ge’s hands were closed in a fist. His grip was so tight that the skin around Chu Shuzhi’s knuckles had turned pale and white.
Something was wrong. Guo Changcheng didn’t think Chu-ge was injured. The other Dixingren hadn’t attacked them in any sort of way, but something was definitely wrong.
The Ferris Wheel began to move again, and the pod swayed, rocking back and forth. While it was a little disorientating, it wasn’t bad, at least for Guo Changcheng, but looking at Chu-ge as he was, he couldn’t help but see a muscle jump along Chu-ge’s jaw.
Nor did Changcheng miss the way Chu-ge’s nostrils flared slightly as he inhaled a deep breath.
If it were anyone else, Guo Changcheng might not have seen those telltale signs for what they were; Chu-ge was in distress.
And it only got worse when their little gondola pod reached the top and the Ferris Wheel stopped with a reverberating clank. Chu-ge closed his eyes for longer than a few seconds.
Guo Changcheng’s worry increased at that sight, and he knew he needed to do something, and fast. Guo Changcheng couldn’t ask Chu-ge if he was scared, that would cause a swift denial, he had to be sneaky about it.
As the pod rocked Changcheng knew what he needed to do; he breathed a gasp.
That noise pulled an immediate reaction from Chu Shuzhi as his eyes opened and he turned. “What’s wrong?”
There was a faint pallor to Chu Shuzhi’s face, and the whites around his eyes were brighter than normal. It caused Changcheng to grimly continue forward with his act. “I – I’m a little scared. We’re awfully high.”
“Little fool.” Chu Shuzhi said roughly. “Should have thought of that before we went on this hairbrained ride.”
“I know.” Guo Changcheng agreed, dropping his shoulders a little, and then when the pod rocked again he didn’t try and stop himself when he reached for Chu-ge’s nearest hand.
He wrapped both of his hands around Chu-ge’s one and squeezed.
Chu Shuzhi scoffed, but he returned that squeeze with one of his own. “It’ll be over soon.”
“Yeah. It will.”
And while Guo Changcheng’s actions weren’t much, it seemed to be enough to help Chu Shuzhi, as the grim lines around his mouth eased, and a little color returned to his face.
