Summary: Blair overhears something he can never forget.
Blair had to shop for Simon’s coffee for his office and when he got back, he was about ready to piss his pants. He stopped into the restroom on the ground level. Feeling much better he zipped himself up and heard the main door open.
“What were you going to tell me about Ellison?” the first voice said.
“You know how the rumor is going wild about him and Sandburg? Well, we may have been wrong. He’s got someone new and he meets him while working. He’s a nice-looking dude, but I really thought Ellison was fucking Sandburg. Didn’t you think that, Dixon?”
“Yeah, Miller, everyone knows about Sandburg and Ellison. You swear that he’s fucking someone else?”
“Yeah, I swear. He was very open about it. He kept hugging him at the hotel they were staying. Maybe they have an open relationship. Or maybe he just fucks whatever he can as often as he can.”
“Man, I was used to it being Sandburg and now we have to start all over again. Is he a cop?”
“No, he was wearing a suit and tie. Not Ellison’s type at all. But maybe he was only fucking Sandburg until he got what he wanted.”
“Do you think Sandburg knows?” Miller asked.
Dixon thought about it and said, “No, I think he’s messing around on him and Sandburg hasn’t a clue. Maybe we should let him know so he can plan around it. I know if my girlfriend was fooling around on me, I would want someone to tell me as much.”
Miller thought for a minute and said, “We need to get back to work. What did the guy look like anyhow?”
“He’s a little taller than Ellison, dressed super nice and the day he was with him, I saw them kiss. That’s how I know for sure.”
“And they were at a hotel?” Miller asked.
“Yes, Cascade Towers. I went in and said I was looking for Jim Ellison and they said they couldn’t give out his room number. Plus, he wasn’t in the lobby. I never saw him after that. What an asshole. I feel bad for Sandburg.”
“We better get out there so we aren’t going to be fired. Spread the word about Ellison. He doesn’t deserve any better.”
The two men left the restroom and Blair didn’t know exactly what he was doing now. Should he just go home, or should he stay? Either way he was fucked. How could Jim do this to him?”
Blair was very quiet for the rest of the day. Jim knew something was up. Megan Connor walked up to Jim and said, “Can I talk to you alone?”
“Sure, interrogation room 2 is open.”
They walked in there and Megan said, “You love Sandy, right?”
“Yeah, of course I do. Why?”
“Robbery and Vice are talking about your new boyfriend. I don’t want Blair to hear about it like that. If you’re going to fuck someone on the side, let him down before you fuck around on him.”
“Megan, you should know me by now. I’m totally in love with Blair. I have never fucked someone else while we’re together.”
“You haven’t been seen with anyone lately?”
“Megan, I told you, I don’t fuck around on him. It’s as simple as that.”
“They even went as far as telling everyone that you were hugging on him and you kissed him.”
Jim blushed.
“Jim, you said you were true to him.”
“I am and I was. I ran into an old flame of mine. We hugged because we’re still friends and then he pulled away and kissed me. It’ took a while to get him off me.”
“Did you tell Blair about it?”
“No, because he would have been jealous. And I didn’t want to discuss it. I told my friend that I was with Blair and I didn’t want to talk to him anymore. Then he left and I haven’t seen him since.”
“You didn’t have lunch with him at a hotel?”
“Jesus Christ. Yeah, we had lunch, it was after lunch that he kissed me. Shit, that’s what wrong with Blair today. He’s all upset with life in general. I’ve got to go talk to him. In fact, you go out and tell him I want to see him for a few minutes.”
Jim waited about five minutes and Blair walked in. He looked so defeated and down, it about broke Jim’s heart.”
“You know five days ago when you were in court? Well, I went to lunch and ran into an old flame. We hugged and had lunch, at his hotel and after lunch he kissed me. I told him to never kiss me again. And I explained that about you and me. He wasn’t a happy camper. You see he bought lunch and he thought I would go upstairs with him. I won’t tolerate him. He’s pissed off, he probably caused a lot of shit in the bullpen today.”
“You’re telling me there is no one? Because the two men I heard today, are used to me, I think they even liked me but they know about this other man and this is going to get ugly. I want to think for a while. I’ll talk to you later.”
Jim grabbed him gently and pulled him in close. “I love you, Blair and I don’t wish to have you pissed off at me. Please say you understand.”
“Jim, how could I say that when I don’t really understand what’s going on. I need time to think. Go out with Simon tonight and have a couple beers. While you’re gone, I’m going to meditate. Goodbye, Jim.”
Jim knew that Blair was going to leave him. Maybe not today, but someday he would and Jim couldn’t stand for that to happen.
Jim walked up to Simon’s door and knocked. “Come on in, Jim.”
“Would you like to go to Brads for a couple of beers and we can eat dinner too.” Jim hoped he didn’t ask any questions.
“Sure, give me five minutes and we’ll leave? Sandburg let you off the leash tonight?” Simon laughed.
Jim laughed too. Then he went out to sit down. Jim really felt like he was going to fall apart any minute. But he had to be strong so that Simon didn’t know about the new gossip.
Jim wished now that he would have told Blair about the former lover. It would sure have been easier.
******************************
At Brad’s Pub, they got a booth and sat down. Simon could tell that something was going on.
“What’s going on, Jim? You seem upset about Sandburg not being here. Did you have a fight?”
“It’s all because of eavesdropping. He heard a rumor that wasn’t true, but to the naked eye, it might look true. It wasn’t. I swear. I would never fool around on Blair. Ever.”
“Did you tell him this?”
“Yes, and he told me to go out for dinner and have some beer and come home later. He needed time to think. He’s probably moving right now.”
“Why is he so upset if it’s just a rumor?” Simon wondered.
Jim went on to tell him all about the freak he had lunch with and called him a freak to Simon. When Jim was done talking, he saw the waitress come their way.
“That’s quite a story, Jim. You’re certain that you didn’t sleep with him.”
“I’m in love with Blair, Simon. I don’t fuck around on him.”
“But Jim, you did have lunch with an old flame and that’s almost as bad.”
“You’ve never questioned it when Carolyn is in town and just the two of us go out.”
“About that, Blair doesn’t like it and he knows he can trust you but he’s still afraid.”
“He’s never told me he hates it when I go to lunch or dinner with Carolyn. Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he doesn’t want to be a whiner. He’s a good guy, Jim and you should treat him better.”
“I didn’t do a fucking thing, Simon. Not one thing…”
“You hugged him on the street and went to his hotel to eat lunch. That all looks bad. Joan didn’t like me even going out with you. Spouses are weird and you need to tell them things.”
“I understand that now, but he better not be packing. I would die without him.”
Simon looked over at the sad man and said, “Go home and see what he’s doing. You’re not good company at all. Get out of here. Drive safe.”
“Thanks for listening, Simon. See you tomorrow.”
“You’re off tomorrow. Remember?”
“Oh, yeah. Thanks for the reminder.”
Jim practically ran to his truck and started driving home. When he got there, he didn’t see Blair’s car. He knew this would be a bad sign.
He walked in and heard Blair’s heartbeat, he almost rushed to the office. He opened the door and Blair was packing.
“Chief, I’m so sorry for not telling you about the idiot who kissed me. I think you could forgive if I say sorry enough times, do you agree?”
“I forgave you at work. I just wanted to come home and clean the office. Did you bring me dinner?”
“I’ll go get dinner now. I’ve been feeling sorry for myself and didn’t even eat.”
“Let’s go together, okay? I want people to see us out and about and maybe there will be some good rumors instead of half-assed ones. I love you, Jim.”
“I love you, Blair.
