[#180] Careful What You Wish For (Original)

Theme Prompt: #180 - Eavesdropping
Title: Careful What You Wish For
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 555
Summary: Melanie can’t help but find herself easily swayed by her sisters.

The trouble with traveling with teenagers is they want to be in everyone’s business.

The irony of Melanie thinking that when at twenty, she’s barely older than a teenager herself. But her sixteen-year-old twin sisters are much bigger gossips than she ever was. And, if she’s honest with herself …

Well, she was a pretty big gossip.

When the couple in the villa next to them frays at the edges, Melanie knows that Lacey and Erin are chomping at the bit to find out what’s going on. And Melanie can’t help but admit to being a little curious herself. Mr. and Mrs. Donovan had seemed to be the ideal jet-setting couple, always bragging about the places they’ve gone and the people they’ve met. But as the week progressed, everything about them has become a little more strained.

The twins want to know what’s going on. Melanie, too, would like to know what’s going on, but she’s pretty sure she could get it out of the wife tomorrow at the pool if she plays her cards right. That’s how people should get their information—right from the source is best. Rumor doesn’t get anyone the leverage they think it does. Not unless you’re planning on doing damage, and Melanie has nothing against these people. As far as she can tell, aside from the loud fighting, they’ve been good neighbors. No reason to burn that bridge now.

But unfortunately for Melanie, her sisters do not listen to her words of wisdom and know all of Melanie’s weak spots.

“Come on, Mel,” Lacey points out, her arms crossed in front of her. “I know you want to know what’s going on, too.”

“Maybe I do, but we shouldn’t be eavesdropping on people we don’t know.” See? Responsible adult. Totally grown from her eavesdropping past. “It’s rude.”

Lacey and Erin both give her flat looks on identical faces, so it’s like she’s being judged in stereo. “Right. Rude says the girl who climbed a garden trellis to spy on her best friend when she was breaking up with her boyfriend.”

“Or bribed a janitor so that you could get into the second floor after hours to find out what was happening with those teachers who were messing around.”

“Or—”

“Okay, okay, I get your point.” Melanie huffs. Then she takes a breath and straightens. “But I’ve grown and learned from my mistakes, as should you. Don’t be me, kids. It doesn’t really get you far.”

She tries to go back to her magazine, determined to stand firm in the face of their matching pouts. Unfortunately, the twins are equally determined, and they’re going to make their point. So they just sit there, staring at her, eyes wide and guileless, and Melanie can’t keep her focus on the magazine for long as she would like.

She glances back at them, and they don’t falter or flicker—diabolical, both of them—and eventually Melanie can’t help but cave.

“Fine. If you’re going to listen at the window, do it quietly.”

The girls titter with glee before grabbing their flashlights and heading back out into the resort. “We’ll report back what we find!” Lacey shouts back at her and Melanie rolls her eyes, pretending to be unaffected by the bribe.

But she can’t help but hope they bring back something good.

The twins really should have listened to big sister. Something tells me they'll e-ither land themselves in trouble or hear something they'll really wish they hadn't.

lol I liked the twins reminding Melanie that she used to be just like them, but how Melanie is attempting to be a responsible adult.

in the forth paragraph you wrote champing at the bit and I think you meant chomping at the bit.
