[#181] Waiting for the end (Inuyasha)

Theme Prompt: #181 - Broken Promise
Title: Waiting for the end
Fandom: InuYasha
Rating/Warnings: PG, mentions of impending death
Bonus: No
Word Count: 550
Summary: Broken promises never bothered Miroku before. But this one does.

Miroku makes his way alone into the village; he has left Sango and the others at Kaede's, but they are not far from his thoughts. It is not that he wanted to leave, but rather the sense that he could not stay, that urged him onward. To this.

There is no one around to see, so he pauses, risks a look at the source of his unease. His right hand, still wrapped and sealed against his curse, nevertheless betrays his latest transgression. The one he has been hiding from Sango since their fateful encounter with the poison master.

The wounds of shouki.

The scars spread beyond where his gauntlet covers, flaring wildly out from the void in his hand, flowing up his arm to disappear under his sleeve.

He considers, silent and alone, the pain he does not feel. Death inching daily closer to his heart.

The wounds are not healed, and will not be healed again. The pain still exists, just beneath the surface. It is not cured, merely suppressed. He will never feel that pain again, even as it eats him alive. But he is always aware of it.

This Sango must never know. How it would hurt her to know he did this... and that he did it for her.

So instead of giving in to his desperate and inexplicable desire to tell her the truth, he has fled. The road ahead is empty, beckoning him onward.

He walks aimlessly.

For the other people in this village, this is a day like any other. They are happy. They go about their lives. They hardly notice his presence.

He watches it all from an unobtrusive vantage point, and thinks about all that he will miss when he is gone—because the end is near, at least for him. For months he dreamed of building a life here, after the end, after his curse, with Sango. Amused himself in the depths of lonely nights by wondering what their life together would be like.

He knows now that he will not survive long enough to find out.

Broken promises never bothered him before. Strange, how this one tears at his soul.

Seeking a distraction, he finds a stick on the ground nearby and uses it to idly trace words in the dirt: Bride. Wife. Daughter. Elder—

The village children have noticed him, and have gathered to deluge him with questions. He is the only person in town who can write, after all. It is only natural for them to be curious. They don't know anything about his current difficulty.

So he lets the carefree mask slip over his face to hide the steady constriction of his heart—his sorrow for everything he wants so much and will never have. But even as he answers the children's questions, his thoughts return again and again to Sango, and to the promise they made to each other.

It is only a matter of time before that promise is broken. His only consolation is that when he dies, Sango will live. She will carry on. She will find happiness again someday.

I'm sorry, Sango, he thinks even as he forces a smile for the children. I wish it could have been different.

But he made his choice. Now all he has to do is die from it.

Wow this was very powerful, not to mention sad and angst filled. I liked it, sad or not.

This is simply heart-breaking, poor Miroku, and poor Sango when she finds out =(
