Summary: Blair Sandburg and Megan Connor want a change with how they are treated at the station. It’s up to them to make things better.

Megan Connor didn’t call ahead and tell Blair Sandburg she was coming over, but she needed some help and he was the person to help things happen.

You see, Megan Connor found herself in love with a very nice woman, who happened to be a police officer also. Ever since they came out, both of them had been treated badly or ignored. Either way, it wasn’t fun for either of them. Blair was Jim Ellison’s SO and he would be able to understand the hatred and ignorance they dealt with daily.

Megan knocked and Blair opened the door and said, “Megan, what’s going on? You never just pop over. Where is Sue?”

“She had to work again tonight. She gets the shit jobs all the time. Can I come in?”

“I’m sorry, come in. Would you like a beer. Jim should be here in a second. He’s downstairs doing laundry. Now, what brings you over?” Blair asked.

“I don’t need anything to drink, thank you. I want to start up a group of us at the station that have to deal with bigots and idiots all day long. Then if we get enough signatures, I’d like classes to be given at the academy for learning to work with someone that is different for whatever reason. I don’t mean just gay. I mean if you’re black, Asian or anything different than white. Cops should learn to deal with them better than they do right now. Can I count on you to help me with the paperwork and the meetings?”

“I think this is an excellent idea. Lord knows, we can’t do this alone. It takes a village and we’ll get them to treat us differently one way or another. If the commissioner goes along with this and it becomes mandatory for the academy, it would help a lot. I would gladly teach the classes at the academy. We could begin with adapting to diversity and the cultural contexts of communities they serve.”

“Sandy, that would be awesome. Do you think Jim will sign the form?”

At that moment, Jim walked in carrying a laundry basket and set it down and shut and locked the door. Being a Sentinel, he heard everything as he was walking up the stairs. “You can count on me for a signature and anything else I can help with.”

“I am so glad I came over here tonight. We need to move on this as soon as possible. Sue gets every shit job from her captain because she’s gay. It’s not right. We’re lucky that our captain is very accepting and doesn’t practice that at all. Sandy, do you want to begin our work tonight, or would you like to think about it first?” Megan asked.

“I would like a week to get things set in my mind and on paper. Then we can start finding anyone and everyone that will sign at the station. They don’t have to be gay to sign, they just need to support us. This could work well, Megan. Jim will help too. In a week we’ll start the group and go from there.”

Jim smiled at his lover and his best friend and said, “I’ll give you some names of people you wouldn’t even think of for signatures. We’ll have a lot of support. But it’ll be worded so that it’ll be more for the communities then for us in the workplace. We don’t want to draw all the attention towards us. That could backfire. Blair and I will start working on it right away. You go home and write some notes of things you want to see in the workplace changing and things in the community that need changes. All in all, we’ll get this going and the commission will see us and we can go from there.”

Megan stood up and hugged Jim and then Blair. “I knew this was the right place to come. Thank you for talking this out with me. I can’t wait to get started. Talk to you both, tomorrow.”

Bravo! This is something we need in every workplace. It shouldn't be necessary, but sadly it is. I hope they get a lot of allies signing and get classes going at the academy. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
