Jim and Blair were sent to an extremely dangerous call that came in. There was a man holding eight hostages. The alleged suspect threatened to kill one hostage per hour until the city gave him what he wanted.
They drove up and saw two policemen looking at the building. Jim and Blair got out of the truck and walked towards them.
“Detective Ellison, you’re a sight for sore eyes. Everyone is supposed to be coming, yet you’re the only ones showing up. We need a hostage negotiator, don’t you think?”
“Yes, we do. I’ll have to do until the negotiators get here. How many men are in there?”
“We have no idea. He just yelled out the window and told us he has 8 hostages. Then he said he was going to kill one hostage every hour until he gets some action from the city.”
Blair said, “You’re sure the negotiator has been called?”
“Yes, Sandburg, we talked to them ourselves. We know how to do our fucking job,” Officer Dalton said.
“Detective Ellison, should I try and talk to him before he takes a life?” Officer Samson said.
“No, I’ll do it with Sandburg as my backup.”
“Jim, let’s back that up a bit. It’s no time for jumping in and being the hero without backup here.”
“This is no time for stillness, Chief. We need action! And I’m going to do just that.”
“Wait for backup to get here, Ellison,” Blair said.
“Sandburg, I need to do something. I’m going in unarmed, so he won’t feel threatened. Then he can let one hostage go and keep me there.”
“I’m just going to have to hope for the best. I think you’re being reckless and should think about it some more.”
“It’s time for action.” He took his shoulder holster off and handed his gun to Blair. “I promise I’ll be careful,” Jim said, getting ready to enter the building.
Jim got to the window and yelled, “Hello, I’m going to come in and see what your demands are and we can talk. I’m unarmed.”
“Fine, cop. Don’t try anything funny…”
Jim entered the building and saw the man he would be dealing with. This is fucking great. He’s high as a kite. They are shit to deal with when they’re high on meth.
“My name is Detective Ellison. I want to see what your demands are. You could let one hostage go and I’ll stay in his or her place.”
“No, I have 9 hostages now. But I’ll leave you to deal with whoever wants to talk to me.”
“This lady is pregnant. Do you really want that on your conscience?”
“Fine, we’ll let the lady go. But everyone else is staying. Now, I only have eight. So I only have 8 hours to do this.”
“What are your demands?” Jim asked.
“My family lost our house and left us on the street. My wife left me and took the kids to another city. I want the city to give me back the house. That’s all I want.”
“Okay, as soon as the negotiators get here, we’ll start trying to get this taken care of.”
Jim’s phone rang and he saw it was Blair.
“What is your name, so I know what to call you?” Jim asked, ignoring the call from Blair.
“Who is on your phone?”
“My partner. He probably wonders why I haven’t called yet.” Jim reached out with his hearing and knew that the negotiators were there.
“Call him and tell him to stop calling, or I’ll break that fucking phone.”
Jim called Blair and said, “Blair, stop calling me. You’re pissing him off.”
“Oh, we wouldn’t want to do that would we, Jim?” Blair answered, angrily.
“He wants his house back so he isn’t homeless any longer. That’s all he wants.”
“The negotiator is going to call on one of the phones in the establishment. He wants you to pick up.”
Jim closed his cell and said, “What is your name? They’ll need that to get your house back.”
“Jeremy is my name and I’m glad you’re taking this seriously.”
“They’re going to call on a phone in this building. When it rings, we have to answer right away. We don’t want them pissed off at us.”
The phone rang, and Jim went and picked it up. “Tell the man we can’t get his house without his first and last name.”
Jim covered the phone and said, “I need the last name so they can get the house.”
“Wickers. Jeremy Wickers.”
Jim repeated it to the officer and then he asked Jim, “Do you think you can take him out?”
“I could try…”
“Try hard…”
Jim went over to Jeremy and said, “They’re going to look into it right now. Should we let them go one at a time to the restroom?”
Jim was getting closer and closer. And just like that, he yanked the gun out of Jeremy’s hand. The hostages started running for the door, and Jim held on to Jeremy.
“I never should have trusted you.”
“I agree.” Jim put the cuffs on him and they walked out of the building.
Everyone was happy with the outcome, except for Blair. He felt that Jim was reckless and should have waited. They would be talking about it too. Jim knew the talk was coming, but for right now, he was happy it was over with. And Jim would sweet talk Blair until he forgave him. Jim was just doing his fucking job.
