Summary: Canon-divergent tale where Aziraphale and Crowley have had their angel and demon identities stripped from them. These are the humans they are now. This is their life.

The cottage in South Downs was a verifiable one-man beehive of activity (Crowley was trying to stay out of the way). Aziraphale had been Planning for weeks. Hell only knew what trouble that could bring, although trouble these days was of a very comforting mundane variety.

You might think it strange that after 6,000 odd years of companionship, the first anniversary of being a couple would be so noteworthy; indeed, you might argue that they've been ineffable husbands the whole time. In fact, most of the Earth (and beyond) would argue exactly that. Everyone except Aziraphale and Crowley, to be exact. However, that's beside the point.

This year was special because it also marked that they'd survived a whole year as humans, a much more exceptional feat. A routine had been fallen into, and they'd adjusted as well as one could expect. Crowley finally learned his lesson about hangovers and stopped trying to drink like a demon. Aziraphale had reluctantly stuck to a plan of less crepes and more exercise. They'd gotten into the habit of taking long walks in the countryside after dinner, and it was one of the most enjoyable parts of their life together.

Theirs is a finite story now, though, so back to the party at hand.

Crowley watched his husband bustling around the kitchen, noting they had enough food to feed an army.

"Have you invited everyone we know?" he asked, glancing around the cottage. "Do we even have enough room for everyone? You can't miracle the place larger, you know."

"Relax, dear," Aziraphale said, patting his cheek as he passed to grab something from the cupboard. "They can spill out into the garden if need be. This is a momentous occasion!"

Crowley snorted. "Can't argue with you there. Never thought we'd make it living as humans on Earth."

"I never doubted it for a moment," his angel (Aziraphale would always be his angel) returned smugly.

"You've always had more faith than me."

Aziraphale set down the plate of hors d'oeuvres he was holding to squeeze Crowley's hand. "You believed in us when I didn't," he murmured softly.

Touched and a bit embarrassed as he was still learning to express his emotions, Crowley wandered into the sitting room, taking in the décor that had transformed their cottage: Aziraphale and his Jane Austen sensibilities.

"Hold on, what are these?!" Crowley questioned loud enough that Aziraphale peeked around the doorframe to see what he was talking about.

One of Aziraphale's eyebrows rose. "You've never seen those before?"

"I know what they are; I was just wondering what party hats are doing at a proper ball?"

"For the kids," Aziraphale answered as if it was apparent, disappearing into the depths of the kitchen again.

"Oh, not the kids," Crowley grumbled as he put one of the hats on his head, stretching out the elastic under his chin.

Truth be told, Adam wasn't a kid anymore, as he and his friends were well into teenhood now. He had his doubts they'd be interested in party hats. Or fancy balls, for that matter.

The cotillion was fine, but Crowley intended to make sure there was some slow dancing as well. Nothing beat Queen, but something was to be said for holding your partner close while you swayed slowly to the music, an activity he'd developed a taste for recently.

Not that he was a romantic, mind you. Not A.J. Crowley.

A knock at the door startled him out of his thoughts, and Aziraphale once again poked his head into the room. "Man the door, will you, dear? I'll be out in just a moment."

Crowley dutifully went to greet their guests.

Anathema and her husband were the first to arrive. The Devices – with a name like Pulsifer, Crowley didn't blame him for taking his wife's last name – swept in with their four-year-old daughter in tow. He transferred the hat from his head to hers, unable to suppress a slight grin as she giggled.

The kids from Tadfield trailed in behind, having gotten a ride from the couple. He didn't greet so much as vaguely nod in Adam's direction, getting an equally neutral nod in return. How did a former demon exchange pleasantries with the sort-of-son of Satan, anyway?

The others arrived soon after, Nina, Maggie, and a few other acquaintances from the Soho neighborhood. Muriel had enthusiastically accepted the invitation as well. Even though they'd never taken to eating or drinking, they had become quite fond of the duo, especially now that there was no need to worry about fraternizing with enemies.

The night was magical, without the need for magic. Good food, conversation, and, ever Crowley's favorite part -- good booze, all flowed. Everyone was there to celebrate this special couple's hard-earned happy ending together.

The only surprise of the evening was when Adam tentatively approached the couple while no one else was nearby. "Uh, I wanted to let you know. I could, if you wanted, give you your powers back," he surprised them by offering. "No one would know."

Crowley and Aziraphale looked at each other. It was the chance to regain their angelic and demonic abilities without strings or consequences.

This time though, there was no hesitation, no conflict of opinion. They had both learned hard-won lessons.

Aziraphale slid his arm through Crowley's. "No, thank you," he told the boy.

"Not interested," Crowley added, letting his love show as he gazed at his husband. "We already have everything we need. Shall we, Angel?" he asked, gesturing to the dance floor.

"Are you going to sweep me off my feet?" Aziraphale asked with an echo of old shyness.

"Thought I already did," Crowley whispered into his ear.

"That you did, my darling."

Aziraphale and Crowley had found something better than heaven or hell. They had found true love.

And God Herself approved.
