[#014] Waxing Poetry (Final Fantasy X | X-2)
Theme Prompt: #014 - Secondhand
They used to ride the same bus to school every morning in the beginning. That's how they started talking; they went to the same school, and shared some of the same classes. Tidus liked to make people laugh, she noticed, always acting out in good fun and getting into trouble with his friends. But Yuna liked to be a good student, working hard and playing nice, someone her father could be proud of.
Perhaps they didn't have much in common, and their time together always felt too short and bittersweet, but she fell for him all the same. His eyes were gorgeous and blue like the ocean, his smile bright like the sun, and his adorable, awkward laugh could lift anyone's spirits.
In time, though, his love for attention and competition resulted in his dedication for the swim team; where the rest of his free time went, she could find him on Facebook, posting pictures of himself and friends at house parties and their random misadventures. In the background, Yuna’s grades and GPA earned her a place amongst the honor roll while Leadership took up the space where her social life should be.
Yuna could only catch glimpses of him when they crossed paths in the hallway. They still smile and say hi to each other, and on the rare occasion they stole moments for small talk, she treasured their conversations the most. Watching him from afar, pining for him in silence ― she wondered, always:
‘Does he feel the same?’
~
Valentine's Day. That's when she's going to do it.
She wrote a love letter in preparation for that day; after many attempts and crumpled papers, she finally did it.
Yuna arrived at school tired and excited, too anxious to fall asleep last night. Although her heart couldn't handle the thought of asking him out on a date, let alone a bold confession in front of so many people, she poured her entire heart into this paper, using her best calligraphy to enhance the message.
She wanted to wait after school when they weren't pressured by the cheesy “Jaws” theme blaring through the intercom to rush to class. But when she ran into him during lunch (alone! yay!), and he asked her if she wanted to hang later, her heart soared. Until she remembered―
“Oh, um… I-I have tutoring in the library after school, but I’m free afterwards.”
“Cool! So, I'll see ya around?”
“Y-Yes! Maybe.” She smiled, beating herself up inside. ‘Did I sound too eager? I have to be calm. Be calm, my racing heart…’
“You’ve got my number, right?”
“Right! I mean, I do. Rikku, um, gave it to me…”
At the sound of the bell, the spell broke between them, and Tidus panicked, jogging in place. “Ack! Gotta go! See you~!”
She waved to him as he sprinted away, smiling― lowering her hand over her throbbing heart.
~
Once the last school bell rang, she scurried out of class, unable to handle the anticipation. Second thoughts were creeping up on her all day: ‘What if this is too old-fashioned? What if he rejects me? What if ―?’
But the moment she found him lounging outside the boys’ locker room, chatting with some friends, she slowed her pace. There’s Marphi, the girls’ volleyball captain, hovering by his side as usual, and in the midst of their playful banter she straight up kissed him in front of all their jeering friends.
“I felt bad.” She stuck her tongue out at him afterwards. “Because no one confessed their undying love to you, I thought you’d like a kiss.”
“I don’t need your pity!” He shoved her, laughing despite his visible embarrassment.
A pink envelope fluttered to the ground, unsigned and undelivered.
~
Yuna stood outside the library, sheltered from the rain. Annoyed by this sudden shift in weather, she sighed. ‘Can this day be any worse…?’
She reconsidered walking back home, and contacting her parents to pick her up ― until someone called her name.
“Yuna? Are you waiting on a ride home?”
“Huh? Oh... hi, Baralai.” She turned around, forcing the smile on her face. Even though they had just spent the last two hours sitting inside a stuffy library, solving headaches in the form of physics equations, she welcomed his cordial presence regardless. “Um, no. I planned to walk home, but it suddenly started raining. So I was debating what to do...”
“I see.” In the middle of unclasping his umbrella, he approached her with a warm smile; now standing beside her beneath the roof’s edge, the senior dwarfed her in height despite his humble carriage, resting the shaft of his open umbrella against his shoulder. “Good work today on your math exercises, by the way. You’re becoming much better at applying those thermodynamic formulas, though I couldn’t help but notice you seemed a little distracted.”
“Thank you.” She blushed, twirling a lock of her long hair. “And, ah, I’m sorry for that…”
“That’s okay. We all have our bad days sometimes.” He gave her a sympathetic smile. “Hey, I was thinking… if you’re not in a hurry to head home, would you like me to treat you to Starbucks? Or Rin’s Diner, if you’re hungry― in spirit of Valentine’s Day.” Baralai smiled, amused by her look of shock. “You’ve been working really hard these past several weeks, I wanted to reward you.”
Her face flared scarlet, and she stammered. “It’s very kind of you to offer! But I-I don’t want to impose…”
“The way I see it, I’m the one imposing on you. But if you’re uncomfortable seeing this as a date, then… think of it as an outing between two friends. What do you say? I’ll walk you home afterwards.”
His soft-spoken charm proved too impossible to resist, and she smiled, taking the arm he offered her as he led the way. “...okay. You win. But only because you have an umbrella. You flatterer."
"Flatterer?" He laughed. "My dear, I speak only the honest truth."

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. <3 And it's always fun to depict these characters in a high school setting! Although I have trouble writing love triangles (I'm not very good at them, let alone invested in its potential for drama), I do hope it feels authentic here.
Again, thank you. <3

So many writers have written great stories for a precious, physical object, that I hope the act of giving someone's heart to another after first love / fixing a broken heart with second love sufficed for this round. XD
