Summary: Carol finds her way to real freedom.

Carol has been looking up her entire life.

Every time someone told her she couldn’t do something, she strives to prove them wrong. Each time she hears no, it’s another hurdle she’s going to have to cross in order to get to where she really wants to go. Every time the sky stretches out ahead of her, she can’t help but reach for it. Climb higher, reach further, do the things she’s told she can’t.

And each time she succeeds, she makes them eat their words about how wrong they were about her. She’s a girl who runs on spite and determination, after all.

The first time she sits in a cockpit, feeling the g-forces lift her up and away, she thinks this must be what freedom feels like. This must be how she can finally feel like she’s made it to the top of the mountain, and no one can pull her back down again.

But that turns out not to be true freedom, not really. It’s hard to be free when the means of that freedom belong to the U.S. Government.

She goes from the Air Force to the Kree, forgetting who she is and getting trapped in another system that only wishes to control her. She finally breaks free and shoots into the stars on her own, with no restrictions, and realizes that this is the freedom she always wanted. The rush of air around her, the clear blue sky rising to meet her: this is the mountain’s summit.

She lands deftly on the front lawn of Maria’s house when it’s all said and done. Her best friend looks at her from across the way, leaning casually against the support post on the porch. “Seems like you were having fun up there.”

“Fun’s definitely one word for it.” Carol approaches slowly, moving to lean against the opposite post as she meets Maria’s eyes. She remembers her now, all of it, everything they fought for together. Maria more so than her, but their battles were the same, back then. Right now, she doesn’t know if they still are. Carol’s world is expanding, and Maria has her own hurdles to conquer. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever felt before.”

Maria nods, drumming her fingers anxiously against the railing. “Your friend Fury offered me a job.”

“Did he?”

“Wants me to start a new division of SHIELD. Right now he’s calling it SWORD.” She rolls her eyes. “Covert organizations and their names. Who knew they were so corny?”

Carol laughs. “Yeah, that sounds like him. Are you going to take it?”

The look on Maria’s face says yes. Her words, however, falter, as though she’s not entirely sure where she wants to go next. “I’m seriously considering it.”

“I think you should. Fury’s a good man. Despite being a spook.”

“Spooks, I can handle. I’m more worried about what you’re heading up against next.”

Carol looks up to the stars again, thinking about Ronan and the ship she destroyed. The Kree is going to be on her tail, for sure. That, and trying to provide the Skrulls with a home of their own, is going to take time. Never mind what other enemies she might have out there waiting for her.

“It’s definitely going to be a lot.” Carol sighs. “Part of the reason I can’t really stay.”

Maria looks resigned and disappointed as she realizes she's losing her best friend again. “Monica won’t like it.”

“Monica is the other. I may be stronger, but I can’t put her in that kind of danger. Not again.” Carol sighs. “I’ll try to come back when I can. But the Skrulls need to find a home and there are worlds out there that need me. Besides, whatever went down between me and the Kree isn’t done.”

“I didn’t say you were wrong. I just said she wouldn’t like it.”

Carol’s eyes drop to the ground, before looking up at Maria again. “Does it help that I want to stay?”

“It does.” Maria sighs, before closing the distance between them with a step. Carol opens her arms and Maria steps into them, pulling her close. “And I know that you’re basically indestructible now, but try to keep yourself in one piece?”

“I’ll do my best. And I’ll try to come back whenever I can.” That latter option is a promise she won’t really be able to keep, but right now, at the moment, she hopes for it.

“Good.” Maria eventually pulls back. “Even after all this time, Danvers, you’re still my best friend.”

“Same here. You’re my family. The only real one I’ve ever really had.”

Maria nods, before stepping to the side and heading to the door. “Well, come on. You’re going to have at least one good meal before you go.”

Carol doesn’t resist, just lets Maria lead her inside and enjoy the warmth of her home for one last time before she goes. The great thing about real freedom, she’s finding, is that whatever comes next always has time to wait.
