Summary: Bobby and Marianne have a tiff during the drama club auditions.
The sound of lip trills greets Bobby as he rounds the corner to where Marianne is doing her vocal warmups. The auditions for the senior production are taking place in the auditorium and Marianne is next in line. He watches her, leaning against the wall as he goes through her usual prep routine.
“It’s not show night. It’s just an audition.”
“Treat an audition like a show and you’ll audition better,” she fires back before turning to face him. “At least, that’s how we professionals see it.”
Bobby fights the urge to roll his eyes. “You do one community theater production and suddenly you’re a professional?”
Marianne scowls. “I have a professional review. It says the spotlight loves me.”
“So you’re not nervous about this at all?”
“Nervousness implies a lack of preparation.” Marianne lifts her chin with a smile. “I’m always prepared.”
“Always?”
“Always. I’ve spent weeks working on this audition. With preparation and care this? Is in the bag.”
“Don’t get cocky.” He gives her a look. He’s trying to cover how much he isn’t prepared, hoping to coast because this is high school theater, and boys are almost a shoe in so long as they audition. But he would like to get a good part, if he can. Maybe even a lead. He just didn’t have time between his job and everything else that’s going on in his life. “You still have to audition just like everyone else. It’s not like it’s just going to be handed to you.”
“Whatever.” Her name is called from the auditorium, and Marianne turns on her heel to enter, before glancing back to him. “If you had asked, I would have helped you.”
He swallows back the bitterness of that pill, before watching as she floats onto the stage like the ingenue she is. He feels the nerves swirl in the pit of his stomach. He really should have prepared more. He should have taken the time and—
“She’s wrong.”
His head snaps around and he turns to find Ginny standing behind him. “What?”
“Well, she’s not one hundred percent wrong. Sometimes nerves can be a sign of a lack of preparation.” Ginny takes a step forward to place a hand on his shoulder. “But sometimes, nerves are just a sign that you care.”
Bobby takes a deep breath and slumps against the wall. “I don’t want to fuck this up.”
“Fair. No one does. But she also is neglecting to mention that this is high school theater. Half of it is talent, sure, but the other half is reliability. Mr. Hinton wants students who he can count on to show up. You’ve proved that. You’ll be fine.”
“I know.” Bobby sighs. “But I don’t want to be just fine. I want to be good.”
“Do you want me to help before you go out there?”
Bobby takes a breath before shaking his head. “No, I’ve got this.” Does he feel it necessarily? No. But he’s willing to give it his best shot, no matter what it takes. “But thanks for the pep talk.”
“Anytime.” She smiles. “It wouldn’t be a high school show without you.”
He hears his name get called from the auditorium and he pushes off the wall with a nod. “Thanks. Wish me luck?”
“Break a leg,” she replies before he squares his shoulders and steps into the auditorium. It’s just an audition. He just hopes that the audition will be good enough to keep him doing the thing that he loves.
