[#192] Being A Celebrity (FAKE)
Theme Prompt: #192 – Spotlight
Title: Being A Celebrity
Fandom: FAKE
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 1000
Summary: Now that he’s accidentally outed himself on live TV, Ryo is worried about how the scrutiny they’ll soon be under will affect his lover.
A/N: Part of my AU where Ryo is a famous country singer.
What was done was done; Ryo couldn’t have taken the words back even if he’d wanted to, which he didn’t. He’d been planning on coming out to his fans, and the world in general, just hadn’t intended to do it quite yet, or quite so publicly, but maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing. At least now he wouldn’t have to worry and stress over it, trying to figure out the when and the how.
The only real problem was that he and Dee hadn’t fully discussed the ramifications of CMA Entertainer of the Year Randy Lane announcing to the world that he was gay and had a boyfriend, partner, lover, whatever the correct term was. Now that everyone knew, it wouldn’t take long for the press to start sniffing around, trying to discover said boyfriend’s identity.
That was very much on Ryo’s mind as he took a cab to a hotel, where he’d booked a room, quickly changed out of his Randy Lane gear, stuffed everything in a shoulder bag, and slipped out the back door. A couple of blocks down the street, he flagged down another cab to take him home, secure in the knowledge that he hadn’t been followed. It never ceased to amuse him that nobody recognised him when he wasn’t wearing his trademark black Stetson. It meant he could avoid the spotlight much of the time and lead a pretty normal life when he wasn’t doing tours, public appearances, or guest spots on chat shows.
Not for much longer though. Once his boyfriend’s identity was known, it would be next to impossible for them to go anywhere together without Ryo being recognised, simply because Dee was so impossible to overlook. At six feet two, with jet-black hair and vivid green eyes, he was devastatingly attractive, and once pictures of him started circulating, Ryo’s days of anonymity would be over.
He didn’t mind, it was a small price to pay for the happiness he’d found with his lover, but he did worry for Dee’s sake, especially with regards to the effect it would have on his boyfriend’s career. Dee was an NYPD detective, and the sudden notoriety he would gain as the partner of a famous singer would obliterate his ability to carry out undercover assignments, something he’d always enjoyed, and was good at.
Ryo was still thinking about that as he stepped out of the elevator on the fourth floor and slid his key into the lock, only to have the door tugged open before he could do anything else. Dee stood there, grinning all over his face, and Ryo found himself blushing.
“I’m guessing you saw.”
“Damn right I did! You knew I was gonna watch if I made it home in time. I worked through lunch so I could take off an hour early. Only missed the first ten minutes, even had time to fix myself a sandwich and grab a beer before you came on.” Dee closed the door behind Ryo and reeled him in for a kiss. “So damn proud of you, settin’ that homophobic asshole straight!”
“It wasn’t intentional,” Ryo admitted. “I mean, it’s not like I planned on coming out on live TV, it just sort of… happened.” He gave an awkward shrug. “The words were out before I knew what I was saying, and then it was too late to do anything but keep going.”
“Doesn’t change anything, I’m still proud of the way you handled it. That guy was a complete tool.”
“I’ll be having words with my agent about booking me on his show. What was she thinking?”
“Oh, I dunno.” Dee’s grin widened. “I think it was a pretty smart move. The look on his face! Now the whole country’s seen him make a fool of himself. Wouldn’t surprise me if his ratings take a nosedive.”
“Still, I’d meant to talk things over with you before coming out. We’ve just been so busy, I don’t know where the time’s gone.”
“Talk what over?” Dee led his lover over to the sofa and handed him a beer before dropping down beside him.
Ryo took a long pull from the dewy bottle, realising Dee must have been watching for him to make sure there was a cold one waiting for him as soon as he came in.
“You know as soon as the press find out your identity, you’ll have no peace. They’ll put the spotlight on you, you’ll have reporters and photographers camped outside on the street, they’ll follow you everywhere, and then there’ll be fans wanting your autograph, the whole deal…” Ryo trailed off, shaking his head. “It’s a lot. Nothing will be the same. I worry that they’ll get in the way of you doing your job.”
“Won’t be the first time I’ve had the press badgerin’ me. I was part of a taskforce workin’ a big case last year and everyone involved was havin’ to dodge reporters. No way gossip columnists can be as bad as that.”
“Don’t get cocky, Dee. If anything, they’re worse, and they stop at nothing, especially the paparazzi. We’ll have them on the fire escape outside, trying to see in the windows.”
“I’d better fit stronger locks and invest in some drapes.” Dee lounged back on the sofa, staring towards the windows. “Black might be too gloomy. How ‘bout teal, or maybe dark red?”
“Dee, be serious!”
“I am serious, babe! If people are gonna be tryin’ to see in, we’ll make sure they can’t. They’ll lose interest eventually, move on to the next trendin’ topic.” Dee shifted to face his lover. “I know what I’m gettin’ into, and I know it’ll be a hassle, but we can handle it. Not that I want to be in the spotlight any more than you do, when you’re not bein’ Randy Lane, but it comes with the territory, so we just gotta deal.”
“I just don’t want to lose you over this.”
“Never gonna happen. I’m in all the way.”
The End

I hope the press won't pester them too much.

Hopefully they can find a way to make sure the press don't get in the way, especially when Dee is working.
