[#193] Somebody's Judgement was Poor (Original)
Theme Prompt: #193 - Surprises
Title: Somebody’s Judgement was Poor
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 888
Summary: Cassie tries to talk Ryan out of a dumb decision.
“This is a terrible idea.”
Ryan stops dead in his tracks and turns back to Cassie, who is looking at him like he’s made a grave mistake. He pauses, looks down at the flowers in his hand, and frowns. “Is it the roses? I know not all girls like roses, but she seemed to—”
Cassie cuts him off before that ramble can go any further. “Not the roses. The party.”
Ryan’s frown deepens, and he turns to look around at the rest of the half-decorated room. “But Amelia likes parties.”
“She does. But she loathes surprise parties.”
“Who doesn’t like a surprise party?”
Cassie runs a hand over her face before taking a deep breath, trying to keep her cool. She tries to explain this to every well-meaning boyfriend Amelia has who has attempted to show his feelings for her, but they never seem to get it.
“Some people, like Amelia, need the advanced notice of a party to prepare themselves for it mentally. You can’t just thrust them into a party situation when they’re not expecting it.” Ryan blinks at her cluelessly and Cassie frowns. “She’s going to be coming home from a twelve hour travel day—would you want to come home to an apartment full of people when you weren’t expecting it?”
Normally, this is the place where Amelia’s previous boyfriends have scoffed, dismissed her and walked away. Ryan doesn’t do that, at least not immediately, and instead nods before turning to put the flowers down. “I’ll take this under consideration.”
That’s still not a resounding answer, as far as Cassie is concerned. But it’s honestly better than she expected.

“So I thought you should know,” Cassie sighs into the phone. “I’m being a dick and ruining the surprise, but I didn’t want you to get caught unawares.”
“And I very much appreciate that,” Amelia frowns as she continues to pack up her bag to head to the airport. She wishes this wasn’t such a recurring problem for her boyfriends, thinking they need to do a grand gesture to show their appreciation for her. At least her best friend is a real one.
Though getting a warning from Cassie is new. Normally, she will warn the boyfriend and then let them crash and burn for not listening to her. There’ll still be a warning—usually in the car as she picks her up from the airport or takes her out to lunch—it’s not this kind of advanced notice.
“I’m just confused about why you’re ruining the surprise.”
There’s a thoughtful pause on the other end of the line. “I don’t know. I think I like this one.”
“Really?” Most of the boyfriends Amelia introduced her to were written off immediately.
“He didn’t just scoff in my face when I told him. He just said he’d take it under consideration.” Cassie pauses again. “I guess if you have to date a man, he’s not so bad.”
“Good to know,” Amelia nods. “Then I appreciate you giving me enough time to process so that I don’t completely tear his head off.”
“You’re welcome. I still think you could do better than men, but I figured I’d do this one a favor.”
They say their goodbyes as Amelia zips up her suitcase and prepares to head to the airport. Time to take twelve hours to figure out how to let Ryan down gently.

Ryan is there to pick her up from the airport when she arrives, and as she gets in the car, she does her best to pretend like she knows nothing. Amelia answers questions about her trip but feels anxious about the number of people waiting for her on the other side. She can do it. She can make it through this without screaming and then they will discuss what he did wrong like the adults they are.
Easy.
Ryan leads the way upstairs, and she’s already looking for signals. Is it the jingle of his keys? Did he send a discreet text before turning off the car? Where’s the signs of impending doom?
But when he opens the door to the apartment, it’s … empty. There are extra flowers, and what looks like a cake, but no people. Her jaw drops slightly, and he offers her a teasing smile.
“Were you expecting something else?”
She briefly looks mollified before turning to him with a sheepish smile. “Cassie may have warned me you were planning a surprise party.”
“I was,” he admits. “Until she pointed out that it was a very stupid idea.”
“So you listen when my best friend talks.”
“I do. She seemed so exhausted that I’m willing to bet that this isn’t the first time she had to have that conversation with one of your boyfriends. I thought that actually listening might earn me some brownie points.”
She laughs before wrapping her arms around his neck. “Well, you aren’t wrong there. She normally doesn’t warn me and let my boyfriends just crash and burn all on their own. She wanted me to let you down gently.”
I’ll have to tell her I appreciate it.” He winds her arms around her waist. “So, are you surprised?”
“I am,” she nods with a smile. “This is probably the best surprise I’ve ever gotten.”
