Summary: It’s Jarod’s first time seeing the leaves change and fall to the ground.

Jarod was looking out the window of his 2nd floor apartment. It was a beautiful day in October and Jarod had just left the Centre and couldn’t believe he missed something as gorgeous as this. The leaves were three to five different shades of color and Jarod watched in fascination as the leaves were falling from the trees and covering the grass with red, gold and green. It was indeed a sight to behold.

As Jarod watched, he saw the landlord starting to clean up the leaves. Jarod wasn’t starting the new job he was pretending until the following day, so, he decided to go and help Mr. Russell. Mr. Russell had been very good to Jarod and even offered to drive him to the grocery store when he discovered that Jarod had no car or license. Mr. Russell never once asked him where he came from and Jarod was happy with that.

Jarod walked up to Mr. Russell and said, “Would you like help with the leaves?”

“Only, if you stop at my apartment for some hot apple cider and pumpkin-apple bread.”

Jarod smiled widely and said, “Sounds like a fair exchange.”

The two men worked side by side and got most of the leaves up. Mr. Russell said, “Let’s stop for now. Come upstairs to my place and have some bread and hot cider.”

“Thank you, Mr. Russell.”

Jarod tied up his bag like Mr. Russell did and followed the man upstairs. When Jarod entered Mr. Russell’s apartment, he looked around and saw such organization and neatness, he was surprised. His place looked how Jarod kept his apartment. Most people weren’t that neat.

“Sit down, Jarod. Let me heat up the cider. It’s homemade. So is the pumpkin-apple bread. My wife used to make it before she died and I watched her every week. So now when I miss her, I make bread and cider.”

“It’s wonderful that you have kept up her tradition. You probably feel like you’re closer to her while you do it.”

“That’s exactly right, Jarod. I’m glad you understand. You remind me of a person that would understand almost anyone. I’m very glad to have you in our building. Drink up and eat your bread.”

Jarod did as he was told and it was delicious. Jarod had never tasted pumpkin-apple bread, so this was something new for him to experience, just like the falling leaves.

They sat there quietly and Jarod said, “I want to pay you ahead of time, in case I need to leave in a rush.”

“No, need, Jarod. Just tell me when you need to leave. I take it someone is after you? I hope you’ll be here for a while. You’ve only been here three days and already you have met all the other people in the building. Everyone likes you, Jarod. You’re safe here. No one would get any information from us.”

“Thank you, Mr. Russell. Just know that I’m a good man and am doing nothing wrong. Someone wants me in an old position that kept me almost like a prisoner. If I disappear, please understand I didn’t have time to tell you why.”

“Understood, Jarod. Have another piece of bread. And let me get more cider. Tell me about your new job.”

“I’m a pediatrician. A young boy needs my help. I’ve come a long way for this and hope that I can help him.”

Mr. Russell poured more cider in Jarod’s cup and his own too. Then he gave him two more thin slices of pumpkin-apple bread. “Good luck with the new job. I know you’ll do well. And if you need anything, let me know. Thank you so much for your help this morning.”

“You are most welcome, Mr. Russell. Now, I need to get back and do some more research before I start tomorrow morning. Thank you for this delicious break in my day.”

As Jarod left Mr. Russell, he knew that it would only be about three days before Miss Parker and her goons would be there to find him and take him back to the Centre. His plan had to work quickly so that he could leave right before Miss Parker and Sydney found him. Jarod refused to go back to the Centre. In the meantime, it was time to see more of the world that he had missed this entire time.
