Summary: After a violin competition, Minami encounters someone who sees right through her.
"You don't actually believe you deserve that."
The voice came from around a corner, startling Minami; she wasn't the yelping type, but she still held her violin trophy more tightly. "It wasn't my decision to make," she deferred. Although she'd been on her way out of the building, she planted her feet to force the other person to round the bend in order to continue speaking to her. "Of course, I'm honored..."
"But it's your last competition." The speaker seemed a few years older than Minami, who hurriedly dropped her gaze in recognition. "To win without putting your heart into it - don't you feel sorry for the part of you that loves it?"
"Your attention's flattering, Miss Kaioh." Minami kept her eyes down - her friend Haruka might not have recognized violin prodigy Kaioh Michiru had she still been accompanying Minami instead of hurrying ahead, but Minami hadn't had a typical childhood. "Yet you presume too much."
"Is that so?"
Minami hadn't expected the veritable Kaioh Michiru to pout in disappointment. seeing such an unusual sight had her mind wandering, reconsidering. "I'm going into a different field," she admitted. "One where I won't need lessons like these. And a friend of mine who loves the violin more than anything..."
How silly. It wasn't as if she'd never see Towa again, but the girl's silhouette had crept into the corners of Minami's focus unintentionally. It should have been Towa...yes. She'd thought that as she'd taken the stage: Towa had never gotten to be the only one shining anywhere during her brief visit to Earth. It should have been Towa's efforts rewarded, efforts that came from her own dream. Not Minami's, the fruits of someone else's.
Catching herself drifting, Minami blinked. "I'm sorry," she hurried to say. "It happened on the first of the month..."
But Michiru just looked thoughtful. "So that's why I noticed," she mused. "We're alike."
"Pardon?" Mentally, Minami took herself to task. She was still a daughter of the Kaidou family and they didn't gape at people they respected.
"My dream didn't come true either," admitted Michiru; a slight hesitation as she flipped her waves of hair over one shoulder gave Minami pause. "But I'm still chasing after what I want. It's that pursuit that makes it worthwhile, don't you see...?"
"...Perhaps," said Minami, the knot in her chest easing somewhat. Hearing her name called, she turned to call right back - the venerable daughter of the Kaidous had learned to lighten up somewhat. "One moment, Haruka!"
Michiru giggled. Actually giggled. "Your special friend?" she asked, and Minami had a sensation of being a cool river through which Michiru's gaze could easily plunge. "That's good. Cherish Miss Haruka.
"And give the violin some attention later," she added, turning on her heels as a car pulled up outside the door. "It's a jealous mistress, Miss Doppelganger."
"...Yes," agreed Minami, left only with the heady sense of being doused by a sudden ocean squall. Kaioh Michiru wasn't anything like she'd expected. But was Kaidou Minami, either?
