[#187] You're Only Killing Time and it'll Kill You Right Back (Teen Wolf)
Theme Prompt: #187 – Bad Judgement
Title: You were Only Killing Time and it’ll Kill You Right Back
Fandom: Teen Wolf (AU)
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 825
Summary: Cora comes home to a new addition to the household.
Cora knows that if she leaves Stiles to his own devices for too long a period, she’ll come home to chaos. Usually it's manageable chaos, something that is cleaned up in a couple hours and they both move on with their lives. This time, Cora left him alone for a week to go visit her brother and nephew in Beacon Hills. When she returns to their DC apartment, however, she realizes she was gone for far too long.
There’s a parrot sitting in her living room.
“Absolutely not.”
“Hey!” He grins as he slides out into the hallway. “You’re back.”
He puts his arms around her to greet her, but Cora is not allowing him to distract her from the point. “There’s a parrot.”
“Yes. His name is Peter.”
Cora closes her eyes, because yes, her boyfriend would name his new pet parrot after her know-it-all uncle that loves the sound of his own voice. She knows she needs to stay on topic. “No, Stiles.”
“No?”
“No, you cannot have a parrot.” She glances up at him with a frown. “Why do you have a parrot?”
“Well, it’s a funny story.”
Cora has a feeling she will not find this story at all funny.
“So I was working this case, right? Big success, arrested a lot of bad guys—not the point. Point is, when we were seizing one of their assets, we discovered he was also running a parrot smuggling ring. So there was this whole warehouse full of these birds, and well. Peter and I hit it off.”
“So you stole a parrot from an evidence haul?”
“No, I submitted all the proper paperwork.” Stiles grins. “So he’s all mine, free and clear.”
Cora nods slowly as she pulls back and turns her attention away from the parrot. “And in the process of filling out all that paperwork, you didn’t think, hmmm, let me call my girlfriend and ask her if she’d like to have a bird.”
“I thought it would be a fun surprise? But I’m seeing from your face that may have been the wrong choice.” Stiles then looks confused. “Why? You love animals?”
“I love mammals! Birds are not mammals.” She makes a face as she turns her glare back to the parrot. “They have weird eyes and beaks and can swoop down at you from above out of nowhere.” She trusts nothing that can attack from above. While she won’t deny that Peter is a beautiful bird, it’s not a bird that she wants to keep.
“Okay, that’s honestly just bird prejudice. If that’s the case, would you be this pissed if it was a puppy?”
He has her there. She would be less pissed if it was a puppy, because she likes dogs, but she would still be a little pissed. But she knows that this will not get better if she doesn’t use her own words to explain rather than just expecting him to listen. It’s still not her strong suit, but she’s working on it.
“Maybe not. But I don’t like birds and it’s not just the bird I’m upset about, it’s that you made this big a change without talking to me first. Because you don’t exactly have a job, that’s going to lend itself to taking care of him full time. That’s going to be on me. And you didn’t even ask me.”
Stiles sits quietly for a moment, taking in that statement before nodding. “Okay, that’s fair. My impulse control has not been the best lately. I’m sorry I did this without discussing this with you.”
“Thank you.” Cora sighs as she leans into him. “So you’ll find a new home for him.”
“Yes. Though this all has been a shocking revelation. I didn’t know you were such a huge bird hater.”
Cora rolls her eyes as she looks up at him. “It’s all in the eyes. They’re murder machines.”
“Cats are murder machines.”
“Yes, but cats are adorable and cuddly and they purr when you pet them.”
“Really? I would have thought with the whole wolf thing that cats would be the no go.”
Cora shakes her head. “No, I like cats. Do not like birds.”
“I will make that mental note for the future.” Stiles glances down. “Are you going to be okay with taking care of him while I find a new home for him?”
Cora nods, because she will not let Peter suffer for Stiles’s poor judgment. “Yeah, I can do that.”
“Thank you.” He leans in to kiss the top of her head. “And I’m sorry for springing this on you. I will speak with you before adding any more living things to the household.”
“Apology accepted.” She then pulls out her phone and takes a picture of the bird sitting on his perch. Stiles frowns.
“What’s that for?”
“Informing Peter of his namesake.”
Stiles grins, before leaning in to kiss her. “This is why you’re my favorite.”
