[#206] Pumpkins and Marmalade (Mahou Sentai Magiranger)

Theme Prompt: Siblings
Title: Pumpkins and Marmalade
Fandom: Mahou Sentai Magiranger
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 778
Summary: Sometimes, Urara gets tired of being the sensible one.

She was the sensible one, the mother of the group, the one who tried to keep everything afloat now that both Mom and Dad were gone. Granted, she shared this position with Makito, but even he could be like a child sometimes - stubborn, sulky, always wanting to be in charge and growling anytime one of the kids told him no.

But Urara Ozu was still human, and she couldn't be the sensible mother figure all the time. Sometimes she wanted things for herself, acted on impulse, wished she could hand the chores off to someone else and relax.

Sometimes she just had to dive in and scoop a kitten off the side of the road before it got hit by a bike coming from a hundred feet away. And sneak said kitten into the house to protect it from other bikes or bigger animals, and hope Makito wouldn't find out and scold her for bringing home such an expense.

"Urara?" Oh, no. A scolding from Makito was scary enough, but Kai was outside her door and if he knew about the kitty, he'd want to keep her, too. They'd once fed a mother cat and her babies, and Kai had cried when Mom said they couldn't keep one of the kittens.

"In a second!" She quickly nudged the cat into the closet, making sure the door was just open enough for her to breathe. "What is it?"

"Help me study? I tried it myself, I really did, but history is so boring," Kai complained. Being a superhero was tough enough on a high schooler without having to keep on top of studying, and even if they kidded him about it, they felt bad for him.

"Ask Makito? History isn't really my strong suit," Urara lied.

"It's not his, either." A pause. "Are you hiding my birthday present in there? You've never locked me out of your room." Urara laughed nervously, trying to pretend she didn't hear the sound of mewing and little paws pushing at wood.

"Your birthday's not for another two months," she said. "I'm...about to have a nap, yes! The shopping really wore me out today!"

"Urara." She could hear him rolling his eyes. "You know you can't hide anything from me, right?" Drat! She'd used that line on him more than once, like the time he hid in his closet afraid to tell Mom about his failed spelling test.

As if to further smash her cover, the kitten meowed. Urara sighed with defeat, opening the door and ushering her little brother inside just as the kitten poked its little orange head out of the closet. Kai let out a squeak, his eyes going wide as he knelt down and opened his hands.

"Is it..."

"A girl," Urara said, "I checked just before taking her home." The kitten sniffed Kai's hand, giving him a little headbutt. "It's not the same kitty from back then, but it could be one of her babies." Before she could stop him, Kat scooped the kitten up in his hands.

"I really wanted her," he said. "I would've named her Marmalade, because I was seven and marmalade was orange just like the cat. Tsubasa called it a stupid name even though he couldn't come up with any better." Urara nodded.

"I would have named her Marigold." She laughed a little. "Or Sunshine, or Daisy. Anything yellow or orange." She grinned. "You know, I think Mom always regretted telling us no. And if she were here now, she'd want us to keep this one and name her Miyu." Kai blinked, cradling the kitty to his chest.

"You think so? Or are you just saying that because you want to keep her?" He smiled. "Because I do, and I don't care what Makito says." Urara wished it was that easy for her.

"We'll have to tell him eventually," she sighed. "But...maybe if we prove to ourselves we can afford to feed her and care for her for a whole week, we'll be able to prove the same thing to him. And he'll say yes."

"Yeah!" Kai said. "Yeah, we'll be the best owners Marmalade could ever have!" Urara giggled.

"Ten years and you still can't come up with something else?" Kai made a face.

"Okay, fine. How about Pumpkin?" he said. "You know, it's kind of neat that you've got a sneaky side! I like having a secret pet with you." Urara ruffled his hair, then ruffled the cat's fur with her fingertip. The last time she'd kept a secret was when she and Tsubasa went to play in the scrapyard together, and in the end Mom had found out about it when they got locked in the cart.

Hopefully, things would turn out better this time and they could keep Pumpkin.
