“You can’t hide anything from me.”
Michael rolled his eyes at Lizzy, who kept on brushing the hair of her favorite doll who had a striking resemblance to her.
“I’ll find out your secret”, she looked at her older brother with her big green eyes, smirking at him.
“You make things up, Liz”, Michael remarked as he reached for the remote control to turn on the TV.
He wasn’t in the mood to argue with his little sister, who was too smart for her age. Just like their father she seemed to sense whenever he was trying to hide something, be it good or bad. In that case it was just something embarrassing.
Elisabeth sat her doll down and with a swift movement grabbed the remote control. She waved it in front of Michael’s face. “No, no. First you tell me what’s the matter with you.”
“Give me that”, Michael remarked as he leaned forward to pull the remote control out of her hands but Elisabeth just moved her hand away, taunting him even more.
After he had chased Lizzy around the living room, he finally got hold of the remote control.
He zapped through the channels until he found the rerun of last weeks episode of ‘The Immortal And The Restless’.
Lizzy made a grimace as he saw Clara on the screen. “You’re like dad. You both like this stupid show so much”, she remarked as she put her doll on her lap.
Michael just rolled his eyes, uttering through gritted teeth “I’m not like our father”. He couldn’t stand it to be compared to him, to him he was a lousy father who made it sure to let him to know that he didn’t thought high of him, Elisabeth on the other hand got the favorite child treatment.
He was about to throw a remark at her but he refrained from it, as he didn’t wanted to bring his mother up, the parent who had loved him.
“Forget it”, he said instead and closed his mouth.
He focused on the screen, during the ad break he went into the kitchen to fetch a snack, wisely taking two to share with Lizzy.
“Thanks, Mike”, she smiled and took the chocolate bar from his hand.
As the episode continued Michael tried his best not to show how the events on screen affected him: a love confession was being shown and the voice in his head whispered to him ‘Image that would be you and your crush.’
He was glad that he had his chocolate bar, he took a bite of it and chewed longer than usual on it. As the scene ended with the love birds on screen kissing, Michael felt the heat creep into his cheeks. He silently cursed his imagination.
“Don’t you feel well, Mike? You’re red like I was when I had a fever”, Elisabeth asked him curious as she stepped forward to him, laying her hand on his forehead.
“I’m not sick”, Michael snapped harsher than intended. Elisabeth backed away, cautious looking at her older brother.
She sensed there was something at odds with him, she looked at the screen and in the meantime the focus was on the couple again. Her eyes darted back to Michael, who groaned as he realized that the chocolate bar wasn’t there anymore, he hadn’t realized that he had munched all of it during the love confession scene, and now there was nothing left to more or less distract him.
The couple kissed and cuddled on the sofa. Michael swallowed audible.
“Eww”, Lizzy remarked as she turned away from the screen. As her gaze feel on Michael, noticing that what he saw on screen somehow affected him, it dawned on her. Even she was so much younger than him, she understood that there was something humans called love, it was simply something programmed into every human.
“You are in love Michael, right?” She grinned at him as she stepped in front of him, leaning into his field of vision. “Michael is in love, Michael is in love”, she began chanting as she looked into his face.
“I am not”, Michael hissed, crossing his arms in front of his chest, trying to ignore his sister who was currently the embodiment of annoying sibling.
“You are. Is the pretty? Does she even know you exist?” Lizzy asked, as she stood in front of him, blocking his view onto the television. Deep inside he was glad she was standing where she was, cause he couldn’t bear watching the actors pretending to be a happy couple. Yet, he tried to act as if he desperately wanted to see what was happen on screen, even he knew the episode.
“Get out of the way, Lizzy.”
She shook her head, her pigtails flying in a charming way. “Will you marry her?”
“Just because you think someone is pretty you don’t marry that person”, Michael remarked, indirectly admitting that there was someone he liked.
“What’s her name?”
Michael shook his head. That was nothing Elisabeth would ever find out. He would keep the name of the person he loved to himself, not only because it was his first love but there was also a delicate twist to this love, one which was better not spoken of in the household.
“None of your business, sis”, Michael remarked as he leaned back in the armchair, still trying to watch past Elisabeth to catch any of the on screen action.
