[#207] Complicated (FAKE)
Theme Prompt: #207 – Jealousy
Title: Complicated
Fandom: FAKE
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 1000
Summary: Jealousy is running rife at the 27 Precinct, even if some of the people involved refuse to accept that’s what they’re feeling.
From the moment he’d joined the two-seven, JJ had been jealous of Randy ‘Ryo’ Maclean, Dee’s work partner. Ever since they’d graduated from the police academy and found themselves assigned to different cities, JJ had comforted himself with the knowledge that one day he and Dee would be together again; it was just a matter of time, and of the stars aligning. Theirs was a love that was simply meant to be.
So, when he’d returned to New York after a few years working in L.A., following his training as a police sniper, JJ had been beyond delighted to discover he’d be working at the same precinct as the green-eyed love god. He’d been sure that all his dreams were finally coming true, but the happy reunion he’d imagined had failed to materialise.
He'd found Dee down on the firing range with his partner, congratulating him on winning some stupid station-wide marksmanship contest, like he could ever be a better marksman than JJ. Worse than that, when he’d greeted Dee with an enthusiastic hello kiss, Dee had tried to push him away. Not that JJ had allowed that to happen; he couldn’t imagine why Dee would be embarrassed or unhappy, not when they’d finally found each other again after so long.
Dee only seemed to care about Ryo though, fussing and fawning over him, insisting on taking him home when he had a fever, wanting to stay and look after him instead of spending time with JJ. And to make matters worse, Ryo had been showing off earlier, taking a risky shot during a hostage situation, something that had been beyond irresponsible. Dee had congratulated him over that too, instead of berating him for his stupidity.
That just served to add fuel to the flame of JJ’s jealousy, because though he would never admit it to anyone, he wasn’t completely certain he could have made that shot himself. Of course, in Ryo’s case it had obviously been a fluke since he hadn’t undergone the extensive sniper training JJ had. He’d gotten lucky, that was all. A whole lot luckier than he’d deserved.
Now, months later, Dee continued to throw himself at Ryo, who mostly seemed annoyed with the attention, while rebuffing all of JJ’s advances. How could Dee want Ryo instead of him? It made no sense, and JJ seethed with envy, thinking of the way Dee’s gorgeous green eyes followed his love rival’s every move instead of being fixed on JJ, filled with love and desire. What was it going to take to convince Dee he was barking up the wrong tree, wasting his energy on someone who clearly couldn’t see how wonderful he was?
Ryo was straight, he wasn’t interested in Dee, not the way Dee seemed to want. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Dee, because he did. They worked well together, and Ryo considered his partner a close friend, maybe even his best friend, at least when Dee wasn’t pouncing on him, kissing him, groping him…
Just the thought of Dee’s hands wandering to intimate places made Ryo blush to the roots of his hair, and the memory of those kisses left him hot, and weak at the knees. It didn’t mean anything though, it was just that Dee was a really good kisser, and an attractive man, which Ryo could notice without feeling the slightest hint of attraction himself. Because he was straight.
So why did it hurt so much to see JJ throwing himself at Dee, kissing him, and clinging to him like a limpet? It couldn’t be jealousy, not when he didn’t like Dee in a romantic way, and yet as JJ continued to pursue Dee, despite all the times Dee pushed the smaller man away, Ryo found himself growing more and more annoyed with his new colleague. Why couldn’t JJ just accept that Dee wasn’t interested?
Still, Ryo always preferred to get along with people, so he tried not to let his resentment show. He was always polite to JJ, even friendly. If JJ mostly just glared back at him or ignored him unless they were forced to work together, that wasn’t Ryo’s problem. He had enough to deal with, trying not to drown in Dee’s eyes. Talk about green-eyed monsters; if ever there was one, it was Dee, not because of jealousy but because he was the embodiment of lust.
Dee knew he was in trouble the moment he looked into his new partner’s eyes, and to be honest he hadn’t made any effort to resist the temptation Ryo represented. He’d even thought he might be making some headway with his flighty partner, but then JJ had shown up, and Dee had wound up having to spend half his time fending off his unwanted admirer while trying to convince Ryo he wasn’t interested in JJ.
Maybe if JJ hadn’t followed them on vacation to England the situation now would be different, or maybe not. Why was the universe so against him? If he and Ryo had never taken that vacation, they wouldn’t have run into Commissioner Rose, and Rose wouldn’t have taken a shine to Ryo. But he couldn’t turn the clock back, and now here he was, in direct competition with a wealthy and powerful man who could give Ryo so much more than Dee would ever be able to.
But dammit, Dee was NOT losing Ryo to that slimy bastard, especially not when he had yet to win Ryo’s heart. He was still working on that, and no rich guy in an expensive suit was gonna worm his way into Ryo’s affections, not if Dee had anything to do with it!
He wasn’t jealous, he didn’t want the money and power Rose took for granted, but it bothered him that Ryo seemed to like the Commissioner. If Rose stole Ryo from him, then Dee would be jealous; he couldn’t stand the thought of Ryo being with anyone but him. Let Rose be the jealous one; money couldn’t buy love.
The End
