[#212} When We Are Weary (DC, Red Hood and the Outlaws)
Theme Prompt: #212 – Hope
Title: When We Are Weary
Fandom: DC, Red Hood and the Outlaws
Rating/Warnings: PG-13, opens with one character having asked another to kill them
Bonus: No.
Word Count: 877
Summary: Red Hood and the Outlaws #9 Night of the Owls canon divergence. Jason doesn't kill Xiao when he asks, he offers him a way out instead. Jason/Xiao.
Jason doesn't understand. He hadn't hesitated to kill Suzie, but he can't seem to do the same for Xiao. But then Xiao is asking for death, is giving up. Jason doesn't know everything the talon has been through, but he remembers how exhausting the thought of starting to live again was. Their circumstances are different, but there's enough similarities that Jason wants to know more.
The place Xiao led him to before requesting suicide by Red Hood is also tugging at Jason. He's looking at Xiao and wondering what few circumstances would've needed to change for it to be Dick kneeling in front of him asking for death.
He doesn't want to kill Xiao. The talon is saying it would be a mercy and normally Jason would respect that, but instead he holds out a hand
“They'll punish me and then send me to kill you,” Xiao warns with such sincerity it makes Jason smile slightly.
“Then I'll shoot you in the head.”
Jason’s words earn him a crooked smile that causes a feeling he thought dormant to stir in his chest. Oh. He hasn’t felt this intrigued by anyone in a long time. He’s so used to attraction being fleeting that feeling it now is almost startling. He should have already felt something else before now, right? Sex with Kori should’ve at least made him feel guilty, except Kori doesn’t remember that she used to date Dick and just walks away when either he or Roy try to bring him up. And now Kori is dating Roy, or at least having sex with Roy. Jason doesn’t understand why he doesn’t feel jealous. He used to have a ridiculous teenage crush on Roy before he died. He doesn’t feel like that boy with a crush when he looks at Roy now. He doesn’t feel anything about the two of them being together. He’s been in a state of either anger, sadness, or numbness for so long that feeling concern and attraction for Xiao makes him want to retreat. Except for the first time in a long time he doesn’t want to give into the fear stirring in him, he doesn’t want to lash out. Instead he keeps his hand extended, “I’m not staying in Gotham. My team and I haven’t figured out where we’re going next, but it’ll be away from this city.”
Xiao glances away from his face to his hand. “You’re inviting me with you?”
“Yes.”
Xiao reaches out slowly and grabs his hand. Jason slips his gun away and helps Xiao to his feet. The motion is smoother than he expects, but then Xiao moves effortlessly. They’re chest to chest for a moment staring into each other's eyes. Xiao’s eyes slip down to his lips. He shifts forward and gives Jason a brief kiss. “In case we don’t make it or I don’t. They don’t just let us go.”
Jason thinks he should say something reassuring or maybe flirty. He’s not great at flirting, at least he doesn’t feel like he is. Jason lets himself reach out and cup Xiao’s face. “Can I?”
“Yeah,” Xiao agrees, then tells him. “Your hands are warm, it’s really nice.”
Jason feels himself smile as he leans in and gives Xiao a slow, more thorough kiss. Xiao’s hands come up to grip his wrist. It feels like gratitude, if they don’t make it out of Gotham at least for a short time Jason knew he had feelings he thought he’d lost. He pulls back reluctantly.
Xiao doesn’t let go of his wrists. Their eyes meet again. “If we make it out, can we do that again?”
“Yeah, as much as you want,” Jason agrees before placing a kiss against Xiao’s forehead. He’d rather kiss him there then put a bullet there.
Xiao squeezes his wrist and lets go. They leave. The signal changes back to the bat sign when they’re halfway to Roy and Kori. If he didn’t have Xiao to get out of the city he’d divert his friends there, check in, probably argue with whoever is at the signal. Instead they meet at the ship. Jason hesitates. Roy or Kori will have questions or objections. He can’t just add a fourth person to their team without asking first. He could posture. Xiao huddles against his back and peeks out at them. His hand is around Jason’s wrist again. No, not around it, he’s got his fingers over Jason’s pulse point.
Roy just grins, goes a bit lax and non-threatening. Lowers his bow. “Kori can be a bit intimidating when you first meet her, but she’s amazing. Let’s get out of here.”
“We should find a way to contact Red Robin and let them know we completed our part of the mission,” Kori agrees with Roy before she looks from Jason to Xiao. “Are you hungry?”
“I don’t know,” Xiao says quietly.
“Let’s get out of here and do introductions on the ship,” Jason suggests.
They’re almost out of Gotham when Roy figured out how to contact Red Robin. They say their goodbyes. No one mentions that they’re taking Xiao with them. Gradually as they leave the city Jason feels Xiao relax next to him. Jason gives his hand a squeeze and he gets one in return.
