[230] Tattooed on my Heart (Twilight)

Theme Prompt: Stargazing
Title: Tattoo
Fandom: Twilight
Bonus: No
Word Count: 428
Summary: Bella is made of stars. And that means she'll never be alone.

They say we’re all made of stars. And now the stars that were watching over her the day of her birth were also inked into her skin, bringing this moment to a full circle. The same atoms that had emerged from the stars’ birth, little fragments of stardust if she wanted to be poetic about it, were tattooed above her heart, beating to the rhythm of her chest like the blinking lights she was currently staring at.

“What are you thinking about?”

Bella was pulled out of her thoughts by Edward’s voice, whose presence she’d nearly forgotten in this moment. She turned her head to look at him, finding herself staring into his eyes like into a sky full of stars. Getting lost in them had become a habit of hers as of late, and yet she felt more grounded this time. Not as alone in the world.

“Hm? Bella,” he prompted her again at her silence.

“Nothing, just-“

She pulled her gaze from his eyes, hand reaching for her chest as she found her gaze turning back to the constellation in the sky that she’d gotten tattooed on her skin. “Thinking that I’ll never be alone anymore.”

She couldn’t find the way to put it into words. The thought that no matter where or when she’d be, the stars would always accompany her. And even when she wouldn’t be able to see them, she would have their presence inked into her skin.

He pulled her into his arms with a heavy sigh, whispering apologies into her hair, and it took Bella a moment to realise the reason why. She hadn’t been referring to his abrupt disappearance shortly after her birthday that had sent her spiraling, but she could understand why he’d think that was the catalyst. It probably was one of the elements that had led to her getting this tattoo after all. His abandonment, and Charlie’s, and Renée’s… All of those and the loneliness she’d never quite managed to shake throughout the years despite her new improved social circle.

But she hadn’t done it solely because of them. This had been done primarily for herself, an impulsive choice but one she’d thought through nonetheless once she’d taken the decision.

And it was great.

This time, she thought as she stared at the stars pulsing like the beat of her heart, she would never be alone anymore. When she could see the stars, she could find the constellation that had been watching over her birth. And when she couldn’t, she’d find them instead beating above her heart.
