Summary: The New Amsterdam family learns about Ella opening a coffee shop. Lauren and Floyd make a proper visit.

“Have you seen it?” Casey startled her in the middle of her morning coffee, almost making Lauren spill it over her white coat.

“I need you to elaborate,” she replied. Truth was that she was barely awake, and the only thing she had truly seen so far were the two incoming of the ER.

“You come to the hospital by the 35th, right?” Lauren nodded. “There’s a new coffee shop on the intersection with the 78th. Vijay’s Brew & Bites.”

That caught her full attention, putting her coffee down on the counter to look at Casey and make sure she was understanding where Casey was getting at. “As in Vijay Kapoor?” Their beloved friend whom they had lost a few years back.

Casey nodded in confirmation. “As in Ella has opened a coffee shop.”

The news spread quickly and by the end of the day everyone who knew Kapoor already knew about the coffee shop. It had also been years since the café at the hospital closed and they stopped seeing Ella regularly, so it was a great surprise to many that not only she was still working in what he loved, but also named her shop after her late father-in-law and who had been her friend since she started working at the Dam.

“We should go,” Floyd said that night as he and Lauren clocked out.

“I was going to get coffee there on my way here tomorrow,” Lauren told him.

“Yeah, you pass by the shop, don’t you?” he realised. “But I was thinking of making a proper visit. Going to have some pastries on the weekend?”

“You’re making it sound like a date,” Lauren joked.

They stopped walking, getting at the crosswalk where they said goodbye to each other and took different ways. “Lyn is flying here on Thursday so I spend a few days with my little girl,” Floyd reminded her.

Yeah, Lauren now recalled him telling her about taking Linett to an astronomy exhibition somewhere she didn’t remember. “Deal,” she agreed on the plan. “Saturday morning?”

“Deal,” Floyd replied.

They parted ways and began counting down the days to visit the coffee shop.

“I can’t believe you’re here!” Ella shook with excitement as she wrapped Lauren in a hug. “It’s been so long!”

“We just heard about this.” Lauren gestured to the rest of the coffee shop.

“Yeah, Casey has been coming here all week,” Ella said with a smile on her face.

“This is amazing!” Floyd added after his hug. “I’m sorry we weren’t the best at keeping touch after …”

“Don’t worry about it,” Ella brushed it off. “I didn’t have any big opening event or anything.”

They were interrupted by the sound of some of the action figures Linett was playing with falling to the floor.

“And when did that happen?” Ella was smiling mischievously and picking up the figures, putting them back on the table before Lauren or Floyd could correct her. “I didn’t know you guys got together!”

Avoiding the topic, or admitting that Floyd and her were still a delicate issue, Lauren drifted the attention behind the counter. “And when did that happen?”

Sameera, Iggy’s eldest kid was preparing coffees and serving pastries for the customers.

“Kids grow up incredibly fast, believe me,” Ella chuckled. “Yesterday my girl was taking me out to pick up leaves and stones for an art project.”

At a table at the back of the shop, Ella’s kid was putting together some artwork with the help of Rohan, Vijay’s son.

Lauren wanted to ask when that had happened, if Rohan and Ella were in touch again and if he had eventually found his way into his daughter’s life, but she stopped herself from asking.

Things were alright as they were, with Linett tugging at her shirt for her to sit down next to her and play with the Spider-Man figure and the place almost full and the smell of coffee and Floyd looking at her the way he was.

“Now, who wants to try some Indian pastries Vijay taught me to do?” Ella asked.

Sounds like a lot has happened since the last time they met, and a lot of assumptions, at least some of them wrong, are being made. I hope they get everything straightened out without anyone putting their foot in it and spoiling the reunion.
