[#017] Fortune Fracas [Original Universe]

Theme Prompt: Avarice
Title: Fortune Fracas
Fandom: Original Universe
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 684
Summary: If it weren't for the laws of time travel, they wouldn't need to have a Sensible One.

It wasn't the first time their peerless leader had gone cuckoo and required someone else to take over for her. But Felicity had never dreamed it would be her.

It wasn't that she didn't love the idea of being rich, of course. With the kind of money rumored to be hidden in the old factory, she could actually visit Ireland, actually experience where her father spent his childhood after having relied on stories and pictures forever. Heck, she could buy a summer home there and hire a private jet to take her back and forth between Long Island and Ireland.

Unfortunately, they were bound by the rules of time travel. It was okay for them to find the fortune, but they weren't allowed to take any of it. They'd lived in the mysterious house and been through those doors and listened to Mrs. Phillips's lectures enough times that even the stubborn Christine got it.

It's not easy when money's involved, though.

"We're almost there!" Terri called. Even the calm and collected Allie Jean was friskier than a puppy, babbling about all the cool ski gear she wanted to buy with her share. Dorianne and Christine were trying to decide whether to buy a horse farm or go on a shopping spree at Barnes&Noble, and Felicity was trying not to let their madness seep into her.

(Even though she could picture the summer home she wanted so badly, right down to the landscaping and the color of the front door.)

When they found the spot marked on the map, Felicity tried her best to restrain Terri and Christine before they leapt for it. Both to avoid potential head trauma and to make sure they didn't dig up the floor. There was a hidden pannel, that's what the map mentioned...

"I'll take care of this," she said, ignoring the snickers of her friends. If any of them were acting even the least bit sane she would gladly step aside and let them do it. She carefully prodded every inch of the floorboards until one gave and she carefully slid it out of the way.

The chest sat beneath it, in all its worn and shabby glory. Terri, assuming leader position, nudged her way in front of them and lifted it out with shocking precision and care.

"This, ladies, is our ticket to the high life!"

"I'll do the honors," Dorianne said, shoving the key into the lock.

"Don't break it!" Terri screeched, but luckily the lock opened easily, without the key sticking. Christine and AJ hugged each other, squealing as Dori lifted the lid to reveal...

...a card. A little yellowing card.

There was enough salt among the five of them to melt Alaska. Even Felicity, sick of being the only sane one, was pissed. All that work, all that struggle for a lousy little card that didn't even have anything-

"Wait, something's written on it," Dori said.

"Huh?" Christine peeked over her shoulder.

"Lemme look..." AJ carefully took the card and held it close to her face. "No greater fortune is the initiative and the perseverence to follow one's dreams, no greater treasure is the satisfaction of accomplishent, no greater legacy is pride in oneself."

Terri, who had fallen completely silent, somehow managed not to snatch the card and tear it to pieces.

"Why didn't I see this coming? I've read enough of those the journey was the real treasure books, what were we thinking?" She groaned as AJ put the card back in the box, locked it up and put it back in the hollowed-out floor. Felicity shrugged, sliding the panel back in place.

"I didn't really need a summer home in Ireland anyway. And all that money would've just spoiled us." Terri half-glared, half-pouted at her.

"Save it, Lissie. I'm not in the mood for that bright side crap right now."

They put the key back where they'd found it, made sure the factory was in order and headed for the door back to 2016. Mrs. Phillips would be waiting, and by now Felicity was sure their teacher had sent them here to teach a lesson about greed.

Sometimes even having the coolest, prettiest teacher in the world as your neighbor is such a drag.
