Huff, huff

Sesshōmaru kept his steps steady, accompanied by the frantic sound of Jaken’s breathing. Human as it might be, the child was quiet compared to the imp, footsteps barely audible unless it walked over fallen leaves left dried up by the cold. After a few moments of quiet, a new sound joined Jaken’s breathing and crackling leaves.

Huff, huff

The sound of breathing, in a steady rhythm that indicated purpose rather than exhaustion.

He stopped, and turned just in time to see the child hide its hands behind its back like it had stolen something. He was sure now that it was the child he had heard blowing on something.

Jaken seemed to notice his interest for he began blathering and fumbling about, gesticulating in the panicked way that denoted his species. Sesshōmaru didn’t let that distract him from his observation however. He kept staring at Rin, the child staring back into his golden without flinching despite his unwavering focus. Lesser demons had failed to sustain eye contact as long as that, and Sesshōmaru once again congratulated himself for picking a human that wouldn’t shame him to accompany him. Still, he wasn’t planning to stand there all day.

“Child,” he said, to prompt it into answering.

Showcasing its intelligence, the child didn’t fuss any longer and brought its hand back from behind its back. There was nothing in them, and Sesshōmaru raised an eyebrow, waiting for an explanation.

Its skin flushed on its cheeks before it answered. “They’re cold,” the child said, before blowing on its hands again like it couldn’t resist the urge any longer.

Jaken had gone silent once again, such that the sound of hot air blowing on small hands was the only one around. It was true that the air had cooled unexpectedly quickly with the sun beginning to set over the horizon. It didn’t bother Sesshōmaru, but humans were notoriously fragile, and their young even more. He’d never paid much attention to such rumours, but some were even known to freeze to death due to the cold.

He put a hand on the child’s dark hair to praise it for answering his question and slipped a hand inside his robes to retrieve appropriate clothing.

He pulled out a scarf and a long furry tube of some kind. They resembled leg warmers, and they would be more than enough for the child to warm its hands.

“Next time, ask,” he said as he handed the child the item, watching it wrap the scarf around its neck and slip its hands inside the warm fur. “Don’t let others think this Sesshōmaru mistreats you.”

The child grinned, teeth white and smile wide. “Yes Lord Sesshōmaru! Thank you for your kindness!”

He nodded, and turned around, the interaction over.

This time, he could hear a new rhythm in the child’s steps behind him. Somehow, it felt more pleasant.
