Summary: Astrid Deetz and Beetlejuice, on apple picking in October 2013 Conneticut. For Astrid, it is cherished time, but it is sad for Beetlejuice.

--

Her papa, cheerful as he is, isn’t the one driving around her grandparents’ town. This isn’t her first October here, but it feels like her most special. Her granny is driving, her grandpa is in the shotgun seat, and next to her other side is her mama, and her trusty camera.

Astrid smiles, trying to wiggle her tiny head out from under her papa’s hands. “Are we there yet?”

“Almost there, Astrid,” her granny says from up front, humming along to her grandpa’s music on the radio. She tries to hold onto the wooden basket Mama gave her an hour ago, and though it is pretty scratchy, she’s excited.

Astrid can only guess this is something about apples. There’s a lot of apples this time of year, fresh and sweet, and she wiggles a bit again in her seat once she realizes her grandpa is probably making apple pie with her mama. A faint sound comes from a crowd, some fellow kids and a lot of adults, and she shifts in her seat.

“Okay…” her papa says, and he uncovers her eyes. Astrid whoops and almost knocks her basket into Mama’s black covered arm in cheer once she sees the rows of apples.

Papa laughs his good natured laugh, turning to Granny. “Astrid’s excited, Delia, look at her.”

Granny shakes her head of bright red hair, but Astrid sees the happiness in her eyes from the reflection of the windshield. Grandpa smiles more readily, exiting the car and letting her and her mama and papa out. She runs a bit ahead, giggling with her stolen basket, hearing her mama call after her. She pauses near a tree, her legs hurting..

Astrid lifts her head and sees a strange sight nearby herself, tilting her head. The stranger is nothing like the people only her mama sees, no kindness in his sharp purple bruised eyes.

Maybe not kindness, but something else.. His hair shimmers a swirling pink and neutral vomit green, and his suit is all full of tears and white and black stripes. He walks amid the crowd of other adults, but with the way he snatches bruised and rotten apples gleefully, Astrid can’t be sure he’s not a kid.

…A bad feeling settles in her chest once she realizes the stranger is staring at her mama. His hair shifts to a color she associates with memories.. dark blue. The color of her faded granny Emily, her granny that Mama has always told her is in a great beyond. Then.. he is gone, and Astrid blinks, seeing her papa close by.

“Okay, Astrid, let’s go pick some apples, yeah?”

“Yeah!” Astrid stands up, holding her basket. “The good ones only, right?”

Her papa grins, and Astrid turns to call her mama, noting the look. Her mama has a strange look, but the older woman seems to shake that off. Astrid smiles and offers her mama the basket..

“Astrid, thank you, sweetie.. Point out your favorites, and I’ll help you get them.” Astrid nods, and looks up to the lowest branches.

Beetlejuice lets out a long breath behind a dead apple tree a yard or so away, once he’s sure the kid’s eyes aren’t on him anymore. So, that was kind of a failure. The demon groans and stuffs an overripe apple in his mouth, now anxious.

He only really came here for his former BFF, good ol Lydia, and yet.. Her kid saw him. An unusual yet normal thing is Lydia seeing him, sure. But that was just one psychic emo kid. Years ago, even! But then the kid, a little girl, can’t be more than five..

Beetlejuice shakes his head, chewing extra carefully around the earthworm in his mouth, and he mentally curses. Damn that Astrid.

He waits until he’s really, absolutely not likely to get seen by Lydia again, before slinking away to the nearby shed, stealing a basket and fresher apples despite himself.

It’s just to blend in, he tells himself, but he remembers those cherished three days with Lydia and gets all.. sad and soggy regardless of going back to the call center. He has to grin and be weird. But Beetlejuice doesn’t really want to, on a good apple season day..

Now, leaning back in a chair amid the shrunken head workers that he considers minions these days, Beetlejuice wistfully adjusts his picture of Lydia and himself. He rolls a fresh Fuji apple in his half rotten hands, hoping just this once, he won’t taste the cyanide he’s immune to.

Crunch.

Beetlejuice doesn’t eat the seeds, this time, and he decides to slack off, taking a pocket knife and carving into a different apple..

Instead of just Lydia, he carves an additional tiny figure, overalls, long hair and basket, to represent Astrid. Richard, he doesn’t give a shit about, he’s too nice. Astrid and Lydia, they have spunk. Delia is funny. Charles is part of the “too nice” category, but he still carves them..
