Pain pulses through Phoebe’s chest in the moment, seeing what she sees in the midst of the dirt. But still, she fires off her borrowed equipment, the bright burst of orange and blue blinding her. The knockback alone almost snaps her arms, but something happens before Gozer can push her backwards to kill her.

“NOT AGAIN!”

Phoebe tries to force her eyes open, realizing she has neither suffered total protonic reversal or any knockback. The beam is still going, still steady, joined now by a second beam. A steady set of hands keep her held on the trigger.

(Her heart swells with hope as soon as the faint smell of sweets and oil reaches her.)

There’s a scream of rage from the Metaspectre in front of Phoebe as the elder Ghostbusters stumble back to their feet, called here by the man keeping her steady. A third and fourth beam powers back on. Her grandfather calls out, his voice blocked mostly by the sheer sound of everything.

“Keep them put in place! I’ll keep Phoebe steady so she can help you!”

Phoebe’s voice is worn out after the day, but she still mouths her thanks. “Grandfather.. Thank you..”

A fifth beam joins the chaos, but instead of what she initially expects, the beam fires across the strange silos. At first, she believed them to be normal silos, filled with wheat and corn. But the silos begin to whirr loudly, and she sees a sea of red lights bloom across the Dirt Farm, realizing the purpose of what she thought to be scrap.

(“Nice replica,” her teacher said, looking an object over.)

(Her grandfather’s notes call it a Ghost Trap.)

Phoebe looks up at Egon, shouting with all her might. “Grandfather, pull back! I think Trevor fixed your Traps!”

Egon nods in understanding, and despite his bad legs, he begins to pull himself and Phoebe out of the Trap Field. Gozer, meanwhile, attempts to wrestle their way out of the beams, and Phoebe sees her mother in the distance. Egon calls out to his daughter then, his voice rough but commanding.

“Calliope! Trap out!”

In the distance, the gold dressed woman hears her father, the phrase familiar in her mind from decades ago..

THUNK.

With a pull of a lever and a stomp on one solitary foot pedal, the Trap Field explodes into chaos as every Trap burns bright with electricity. Phoebe lets go at last, her arms cramping and exhausted, and she watches Gozer roar and be torn asunder.

But not once does she look at the Traps themselves, not daring to look.

(“Now, uh, I heard you can’t look at the Traps. Standard procedure of the Ghostbusters,” Grooberson had warned, before he mistakenly freed Vinz.)

Eventually, the thrum of bursting nuclear energy stops, and the intense light becomes nothing more than motes of leftover PKE. The Traps buzz and close, their lights now an unanimous green. Phoebe realizes she’s knocked Egon over now that she hears the Proton Pack click into an exhaust mode just behind her head. The other Ghostbusters 20 feet away look just as worn out, as does her mom and her brother.

She’s trembling, but sheds the Proton Pack once the statues of Zuul and Vinz Clortho shift, and she rushes to the latter, kicking the stone to break it.

“Mr. Grooberson! Lucky?! Can you hear us?!” she calls. A dirty, hairy hand picks at the remains of Vinz, while Trevor rushes over and helps Lucky at the same time. Both diner worker and teacher cough alike, drained and covered in dust and ectoplasm.

Callie and the other Ghostbusters approach too, at this point, and while Trevor hugs Lucky, the weirdly youngest of the old Ghostbusters shakes his head. Venkman is the nametag she sees when she turns fully around.

“You must be joking, Spengz.. You weren’t kidding?”

Egon hobbles over, and practically crushes the stranger with a hug, a rare thing Phoebe doesn’t see him do. “Peter, shut up and hug me back at once.”

“Ugh,” Venkman says, his voice all choked up. Stantz - Ray, Phoebe reminds herself, as well as Zeddemore hug Egon too, despite all four older men having some kind of injury from the battle.

Phoebe, still very much exhausted from no sleep and very little even in adrenaline to spare, lets herself drop to her knees, and her mom comes and supports her weight, stunned.

“You OK, Pheebs?” Callie asks quickly, and the teenaged scientist nods.

“I’m okay.. Just dizzy..” Phoebe doesn’t even believe herself saying so, so she just lets her mom hug her, the dust settling in her dark curls and her mother’s bleached hair. “Grandfather.. Thank you..”

Egon kneels with the help of Ray, and he pats Phoebe’s shoulder with a warm expression despite not smiling.

“No, my starshine, I must thank you. Thank you for believing me.”

Trevor finally rejoins everyone, after checking on Gary and Lucky and a very sticky Podcast, and he adds to the family group hug between Egon and Callie, huffing softly. The sun finally begins to rise with the clouds, bathing the damaged farm in a hopeful light, and Phoebe breathes a sigh of relief.
