[#241] Drowning (Original)
Theme Prompt: 241 - Stubbornness
Title: Drowning
Fandom: Original
Tags: Mermaid, Mystery
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 498
Summary: Xenia wants to swim. She is not allowed to drown.
Note: The characters were named X and Z until literal seconds before posting XD
“You’re not allowed to drown.”
Xenia looked at her friend, an eyebrow raised in consternation. Zen looked deadly serious though, arms crossed and lower lip stuck out in a pout. It even seemed to be trembling a little if she stared longer.
“I’m a mermaid,” she pointed out. “I can’t drown, you of all people should know.”
Zen’s expression didn’t change, which just meant that logic wasn’t gonna help in this specific situation. Xenia rolled her eyes and leaned back to hoist herself up on the bank.
“What do you want to say?” Xenia asked.
She waited for an answer, but Zen only fidgeted, like they wanted to say something and didn’t at the same time. It was fucking annoying, and after a few seconds of silence, Xenia readied herself to dive back into the water.
“Wait!”
Xenia took a deep breath and went back to her original position, letting the tip of her tail stay in the water. “Now what,” she complained.
Zen was looking panicked now, for absolutely no reason, and still wasn’t saying shit. Xenia did not have just that to do. She wasn’t busy either, but she wasn’t gonna waste time just sitting on this dumbass rock with her dumbass friend when what she wanted to do today was to explore the depths of the waters around.
“Come on, Zen, don’t be so stubborn and just tell me what’s up. You usually never shut up and now you’re just making me go back and forth like I have nothing else to do.”
“You’re not allowed to drown,” Zen repeated, with no further explanation, and Xenia was done. She turned to leave again, shaking her head.
“I’m not staying here for-“
“Will you just listen to me, for once?”
And Xenia actually had to stop and look at Zen to make sure that she hadn’t heard wrong, because what? “I’ve done nothing but listen to you this entire time, you’re the one not saying anything, and I’m the one who’s not listening?”
“You’re listening to my words, but you’re not listening to the rest!” Zen protested, with such vehemence that it stopped Xenia short.
What, rest? There wasn’t anything else to listen but what Zen was saying, so what else was Xenia supposed to pay attention to? Zen seemed stressed out, and now that Xenia was paying more attention, there seemed to be something odd.
“Okay,” Xenia said, paying full attention to Zen now and measuring her words. “Tell me everything, I’m listening.”
The relief was physical on Zen’s body. Loosened shoulders, and with a deep breath, all the tension seemed to flow out of them as they closed their eyes.
“You. Are not. Allowed. To drown.”
Each word was said deliberately, slowly, and something about the cadence told Xenia that those were the only words Zen could use to express their current thought. Which meant that something was keeping them from saying the rest.
Which was absolutely terrifying.
And Xenia had to fix it.
