Author's note: I spent far too much time looking up if animals can cry, and thus would mermaids cry in return. (Fish don't, mammals do, aquatic animals may?? idk, but mermaids do)
Summary: This betrayal is a tragedy to Xenia. She has to prove everyone wrong.
“You come back girl!”
She sure heard him, but she wasn’t listening. She was going as fast as she could, water flowing over her skin and fins as she dashed through the waves. This wasn’t wise, she knew. There was a storm brewing and after her latest bout of illness she wasn’t yet cleared to go very deep. She’d be stuck near the surface if the weather got worse, and she hadn’t taken her beads in case she needed to contact someone, in such a hurry was she.
But she had to go. She had to know. It couldn’t be true, what they said. Cora wouldn’t have betrayed them like that. And Xenia had to find her to be able to tell her herself.
It was a futile hope, she knew. Cora had always been among the fastest in their group, and try as she might, Xenia had never managed to best her. She also didn’t when Cora had left or which direction she had gone in among the vastness of the ocean. But still, she couldn’t give up.
It was impossible for Cora to be the one who’d orchestrated the destruction of their community this way. Not Cora with her open gaze and even more open heart.
Her eyes were wet with ocean water already, but Xenia only had to feel the sting in her nose to know that she was crying.
And as the splitter splatter of rain on the open waters began with the faraway rumbling sound of thunder, she knew the weather was crying with her.
