[#251] NOT LOOKING LIKE A PRINCESS TODAY OR TOMORROW (VALDEMAR SERIES - MERCEDES LACKEY)

Theme Prompt: #251 - Royalty
Title: not looking like a princess today or tomorrow
Fandom: Valdemar series - Mercedes Lackey
Ratings / Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: No
Word Count: 322
Summary: For once Princess Elspeth has some freedom, even though she's on a mission.

To be a Princess was to be constantly observed, Princess Elspeth thought, not for the first time.

Even more so in her case. Even though she was a Herald and bonded with Gwena, the white horse-appearing Companion she loved.

As a child, she had been ill-tempered and arrogant, even though it wasn't entirely her fault and she had made amends for it.

But her late, unlamented father had been a traitor and had seen her mother Queen Selenay as an obstacle to the throne of Valdemar easily removed. She wasn't and he had paid with his life for thinking that.

So there were a lot of courtiers and others who were still ready to think she could be a traitor at any moment. Elspeth was plain, so of course she would be jealous of her beautiful, golden-haired mother the Queen.

Could Elspeth be blamed for thinking some of her fellow Heralds would quietly hope Gwena 'would take care of things' the first sign Elspeth showed of being treacherous?

It was a wonder that she had been let out of the country at all on a mission to find mages with Herald Skif as her bodyguard.

But part of her had been relieved when Quenten advised them that the best way for them to travel through the countryside in their search was disguised as prosperous mercenaries.

So right now, no one looks at her as a possibly treacherous Princess (or someone to capture for ransom). No one is judging her for the things she says and the bright foreign outfits she's wearing. Rushing to her mother to report all her 'misbehavior'.

Yes, their Companions are passing regular reports back home through their special ways and means. But not reporting every single word and action.

So there's a freedom right now that Elspeth is having, that she's never had before. Despite Skif's sometimes judging looks towards her, she's going to enjoy every second.

Royalty seldom gets such freedom. I'm sure Elspeth welcomes the lack of scrutiny.

Very bittersweet snapshot of Elspeth’s situation, I’m hoping things improve for her!
