Summary: Kate and Clint are on their way back to NYC when they stop for a midnight snack, deciding to call it a night and rest in a random town’s motel.

The last hours of the trip had been quiet, with Clint driving in silence and Kate trying (pretending) to fall asleep on the passenger seat. They had been sent to some compulsory team management and bonding camp over the weekend, but they had managed to rent a car to drive back to NYC and have some quiet for the two of them.

It was almost midnight when Clint’s stomach rumbled, like on cue the second he saw the sign of the town they had to drive through. The second thing he noticed was the 24/7 convenience store, so he didn’t need much more convincing to stop there and have a break.

Pulling off close to the door, he got out of the car quietly, not wanting to wake Kate up. When she was alone, she arched an eyebrow over her crossed arms, realising her guess was correct and Clint had, in fact, not just left her in the middle of nowhere, but gone on a midnight snack hunt alone.

She followed after him, appearing right in front of Clint when he turned to the aisle of the cool drinks. “Where are we?” she asked, because she had kept her eyes closed for the most part of the trip —since Clint told her to get some sleep and she started trying.

“Weren’t you sleeping just a minute ago?” Clint questioned, not surprised. He was already holding two bags of snacks.

“Why does this place feel like the setup for a horror movie?”

“Because it’s late and you’ve seen too many of them,” Clint chuckled, and walked past her to grab some cold water. “I didn’t get the name of the place, but it’s the first town we’ve seen in two hours.”

She looked at him scanning the next aisle, and followed his steps. From the fridge, she grabbed something fizzy with cherry flavour and a coffee for Clint —he would thank her later, because Kate still didn’t know how he had survived the past two days without caffeine.

Kate found Clint standing in front of a shelf with candies, and she saw what he had picked up already: apart from the bottled water, he had a trail mix and a bag of plain chips. No cheese, no spicy or ham flavour.

“We’re off the camping, pal,” she reminded, reaching to grab the bag of candy that was more colourful. “Like, you can have some junk food and no one will say a word. And you deserve it, after behaving for the whole weekend and then driving.”

Clint turned to Kate, who had caught a bag of flaming hot chips and was then looking at a questionable-looking hot-dog that was in a display cabinet next to the counter. “There’s still miles to go, and I don’t want a sugar-powered stomach ache or getting my fingers dirty from chips,” he explained.

“Well,” Kate shrugged, turning back to him, “you still like sour candy, don’t you?”

He didn’t have to answer, because Kate picked up a bag and moved on to order one of the questionable hotdogs.

They moved the car when they got out of the store and sat on the hood for a moment, enjoying their snacks.

“Do you ever just stop to enjoy things, or you’re always on alert?” Kate asked Clint. He brushed it off with a joke, but she pushed— “you act like the world will fall apart if you let yourself relax. And I understand the trauma response, but right now we’re safe, and you’re as tense as a hippopotamus in a pottery shop.”

Clint was too tired to laugh and yawned as he put away his snacks. “Let’s go, it’s late and I don’t want you to get a cold.”

“What do you think you’re doing?” Kate yelled before he could get inside the car. “You’ve had two peanuts and a bottle of water, you’re in no condition to drive.”

“They expect us to be back by morning,” he complained.

“So let them, they’ll live. The thing is we do too while we get back.” Kate pushed Clint’s hand away from the door handle, and got into the driver seat. “Let’s find a motel and rest. At least a few hours?”

The second she hit him with the puppy eyes, Clint sighed, gave up, and climbed into the passenger seat.

There was just one road that crossed the whole town, and soon they had found the motel and were at the reception waiting to get the keys to their room. Their only luggage was a sports bag each, so after taking them into the room and flopping on the bed, the exhaustion noticeable in each one of their cells, they realised there was just one bed in that room.

“Don’t make this harder than it’s supposed to be and let’s just go to sleep,” Kate encouraged.

Clint was too tired to complain, so he partially undressed and buried himself under the sheets. Kate quickly brushed her teeth, changed to some pyjama pants and put a random hoodie on before joining Clint on the bed.

He was slightly snoring by then.

Kate woke up to the soft glow of morning light seeping through the motel’s thin curtains. The room smelled faintly of cheap fabric softener and the lingering salt of last night’s snacks open somewhere.

Her first thought was that the bed was too warm. Her second was that her head was on Clint’s shoulder, and his arm draped lazily around her waist. Somewhere in the night, they had shifted closer, his hand resting against the small of her back where her hoodie had ridden up.

For a brief moment she just lay there, letting herself feel the security of it —his steady breathing, his quiet, the solid warmth of someone who had spent a lifetime keeping others safe like that was what he had been born for.

Then her brain caught up. She should move before he—

“Don’t.” Clint mumbled. “For once, I’m not tense.”
