[#256] Little Pet (QZGS)
Theme Prompt: 256 - Man's best friend
Title: Little Pet
Fandom: Quánzhí Gāoshǒu|King's Avatar
Rating/Warnings: No
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 646
Summary: Ye Xiu had never expected to get a pet. It stood to reason that the only pet he'd get would be a virtual one.
Ye Xiu couldn’t remember where he’d first found it. It might have been on the bottom of a bag he’d picked up from the street. It could have been one of Mucheng’s toys she’d gotten from somewhere else. Or it may very well have been in his room all along, waiting for someone to stumble upon it.
All that was important was that Ye Xiu hadn’t meant to become a pet owner. But when he turned on that little tamagotchi toy with idle curiosity, he hadn’t expected how important it would grow to become in his life.
He named it One Autumn Leaf, partly to keep this character he couldn’t spend as much time with as he wanted close to his heart. Also partly because it amused him to think of that haughty character as a round pixellated ball with long dark rabbit-like ears.
“You’re smiling more these days.”
Ye Xiu blinked. “Why, I didn’t know you liked my smile so much, Mucheng, I can smile more just for you.”
She grinned despite herself and pushed his shoulder in retaliation. “I mean it, you know? Did something good happen?”
Ye Xiu didn’t answer, fingers reaching into the pocket of his jacket to curl around the small egg nestled in the padded interior. It was smooth as ever, the three buttons coming out of it a comforting rhythm against the pad of his thumb.
Mucheng didn't answer, simply stepping beside him as they went back to Excellent Era.
---
He eventually caved and bought a second one, not that he would ever let anyone know. Lord Grim turned out unfortunately uglier than his Glory counterpart. It made Ye Xiu laugh to see it at first.
“He’s nearly as ugly as your fashion sense, Muqiu,” he said to himself as he stared at the virtual pet. It looked like a balloon, mostly, only with ridiculous pursed lips that were nearly as wide as its face. Even Mucheng wouldn’t call it cute. Not that she’d ever see it. It would stay his and Muqiu’s little secret.
---
The avatar was doing an odd emote he hadn’t seen before. And there was...
Ye Xiu squinted, peering at the screen like the pixels would magically grow sharper. He zoomed in on One Autumn Leaf’s face, muttering under his breath.
“Now what is that in your mouth?”
The avatar seemed to be… chewing on something? Or trying to eat something, that wasn’t clear. Ye Xiu found himself wishing Glory had better graphics, which was rather ironic considering that he’d been rather vocal in his disappointment of the higher ups deciding to prioritize graphics over gameplay back in season 2 of the Pro-Leagues.
Joke was on him now, as One Autumn Leaf was now chomping on something Ye Xiu couldn’t see.
“Spit it out, I want to see,” Ye Xiu muttered, only to stare as the avatar did exactly that.
Ye Xiu blinked for a moment, then rubbed his eyes. He zoomed out, mind reeling even as his fingers remained steady. There, at One Autumn Leaf’s feet, was a small creature that was all too familiar to Ye Xiu. Long dark furry ears perked up from a round short-furred body, and grass was flying in the air in its wake as it rolled on the ground around One Autumn Leaf. There wasn’t any sound that Ye Xiu could hear, but the creature soon stood up with obvious contented emojis surrounding it.
Ye Xiu glanced back at One Autumn Leaf’s face, finding it darkened with dark shadows and moments away from violence. He zoomed into the small creature again.
It was indeed his little One Autumn Leaf tamagotchi. There, present in Glory. And it seemed far too happy for a creature that had just nearly been eaten by its namesake.
"Mucheng was right," Ye Xiu muttered, clicking out of the game window. "I really should sleep."
