[#259] Buried in the Dark (MCU Thunderbolts)
Title: Buried in the Dark
Fandom: Thunderbolts (Movie 2025)
Rating/Warnings: Teen and Up Audiences. Unresolved feelings, teasing within the team. Set post-the movie, no spoilers. Blue is an original character of mine.

Summary: The Thunderbolts follow a lead to a secretive lab hidden in a cave, looking for Dr. Blue —an old ally with a past entwined with Bucky’s.
The cave seemed to be deep, from the way their boots echoed in the distance as the Thunderbolts followed the lead Bucky had received about an old acquaintance.
Bucky had told them just what they needed to know about Blue, choosing to skip the emotional part of their relationship when they worked together years before. And from the lack of explanation on their relationship status … the team had their guesses.
“My question is,” Yelena chose not to tease him, “are they cooler than you? Because I am picturing someone with better taste in jackets.”
“They’re fine,” was Bucky’s dry answer.
“And this person—you’re saying they voluntarily hung out with you? Like, on purpose?” John questioned.
“During our mission together, yes,” Bucky confirmed. He had been leaving crumbs of their past history, a few for the others to pick up that there were things he wasn’t just ready to talk about.
“Someone who builds a lab in a cave clearly doesn’t trust people,” Ava said, reaching Bucky’s level. “I get that. But do they trust you?”
“Once I trusted them blindly, and they did the same with me. That made their undercover operation a success. Now, from the short list of allies that Blue has … I don’t think I’m the last one.”
A cough came through the comms followed by Bob’s voice. “So gimme the basics—did this ‘old flame’ thing end with angry notes or dramatic departures? I need details. There’s a bet.”
Bucky turned around, looking at the rest of the team. “There’s a what?”
“Ahhh, love!” Alexei patted Bucky’ shoulder, violently stopping him from getting mad. Although … the Red Guardian’s words didn’t make it better. “The great distraction! The Winter Soldier, reduced to a sentimental fool. I must say it is delightful.”
“Okay and on a scale from one to ten,” Bob cut in again, “how scary is that cave?”
“It’s not scary,” John replied quickly.
“That’s because you’re not seeing the spider on your head,” Ava jocked.
John patted his head, frenetic, shaking to try and get rid of the inexisting animal. “Is it gone?”
Yelena had, of course, stopped to enjoy the show. “You’re disheveled now. So, perfect!”
Ava joined her in a muffled laugh, with John giving them a stinky look and turning away to resume his way.
From a distance, camouflaged cameras had been capturing the Thunderbolts’ exchange and streaming their entrance at the main room at the end of the cave.
The door was open when they arrived, to Alexei’s disappointment (because he hadn’t smashed a door in a week). It was empty, but had light, and they soon spread all over the room.
They started inspecting the lab setup, the vials and files and monitors. Someone picked up a diary. Some others tried to make sense of the untitled statistics in the middle monitor. In a side room, where Blue lived, they waited for their main entrance.
The energy shifted the moment they stepped into the lab. All eyes are on them: Bucky’s soft, Yelena’s wide open, the other’s curious. Blue didn’t know how seeing Bucky again would feel like, but not like this. Their emotions remained buried after years of distance, and isolation, and it was not easy to set them free now.
“Guess I should’ve known Ross would send you,” they simply said.
“We’re not here because of Ross.” Bucky’s voice was quiet, unreadable. “We’re here because I wanted to make sure you weren’t buried in this cave.”
