It was summer when she burned. A summer that should have heralded adventures, and discovery. A summer she thought would lead her to new heights and new relationships. A summer that became everything but what it should have been.

They didn’t know the truth about her, only that she was different and too cold. Only that she was too strong and made them uneasy despite all her efforts to appear otherwise. They knew she was kind, and loyal, and hardworking, yet none of that was enough in the face of her obvious abilities.
It was summer when she burned, and yet her forethought had ensured she ended up with nothing but a scar on her leg, apparating away after those she thought she could trust had set fire to the pyre. After they had shown through their actions that there was no going back, that they did not deserve Helga’s loyalty.

Helga couldn’t stop trusting though. Call it foolishness, or call it her nature, but she refused to close her heart to the beautiful possibilities the world had to offer. She refused to believe she would never again find that support she had had once, before she learned that the loyalty of those she trusted was conditional, there only when convenient and vanished when it no longer benefited them.

It was summer when Helga met Rowena. She had been wandering, treating the trip as a vacation rather than the semi-exile it truly was. A summer vacation that felt like a new attempt at the summer that should have been yet never was.. It was summer, and the burning heat of the sun in the sky no longer fueled a pulsing pain on her leg where the wound had healed with a lasting mark that kept her from forgetting. It was summer when Helga let herself trust again, with the certainty that her loyalty would be returned, that they shared common values and ideals.

It was summer when Rowena made herself a place at Helga’s side and decided she wouldn’t leave. It was summer when, through her actions, Rowena swore loyalty, and the scar on Helga’s leg burned with something other than pain. It burned with hope. And Helga saw that flame that had once so scared her burn in Rowena’s eyes with a renewed devotion.

She wouldn’t be alone anymore. Not as long as Rowena was around.
