[#265] INFLUENCER (TORCHWOOD)

Theme Prompt: #265 - Trickster
Title: Influencer
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating/Warnings: M
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 1,000 words
Summary: Jack is certain that he can’t be corrupted.

Jack was still annoyed with the Assistant Director as he stomped down the hallways of the accommodation quarters of the Time Agency. He didn’t need a partner. He didn't want one, much less a bad apple that was being foisted on him. So much for reward for a job well done, he seethed.

He reached the doorway, paused, gritted his teeth and then hit the intercom. The door slid open without preamble, and immediately Jack saw his new partner sprawled on the bed, wearing nothing but his boots and his underwear. The man grinned at him. ‘You must be Jack.’

Jack tried to hold his patience in check. ‘And you must be John.’

‘Mmm,’ he hummed, stretching out like a cat. ‘But you can just call me ‘goddess’. Most people do.’

Jack raised an eyebrow at him. ‘You're joking, right?’

John returned him a look that suggested he was a little surprised by the backchat. ‘No, really. I mean we can come up with other pet names when we know each other better but for now, goddess is fine.’

Jack snorted. ‘So the rumours about you are true.’

John lounged back against the bedhead, uncrossing his legs and switching them around suggestively. ‘All of them,’ he said with a leering gaze and a grin.

Jack crossed his own arms, leaning against the door as it had slid shut behind him, sealing him inside with this creature of depravity. ‘Psychopath? Sex addict?’

‘Don't forget criminal mastermind. That one's my favourite. Now shall we fuck and get the niceties out of the way?’

‘No chance,’ Jack replied. He may have been flexible in his preferences, not wanting to be tied down by any convention that restricted who he was allowed to fall in love with, but there was a gap a hundred parsecs wide between love and lust. ‘We have to work together,’ Jack told him, ‘because it's that or the top brass are putting you through a decommissioning.’

‘Pshaw!’ John waved him off. ‘They've been threatening that for years. Name me one Time Agent that has been locked in that vacuum chamber and pulled apart atom by atom.’

‘Always a first,’ Jack warned him.

John patted the bed next to him. ‘Come here. That pouty defiant tone is quite sexy on you. I might be getting turned on.’

Jack rolled his eyes. ‘Dream on.’

‘Fine. So come sit here and we'll just cuddle for a bit whilst we decide who we're going to rob next.’

‘Rob?’

‘Steal, swindle, hustle, entrap, deceive, knick, pilfer purloin, rip off…’ He shrugged. ‘It's just words.’

‘We have a job to do.’

‘And no one said we couldn't get rich on the side.’ He tapped his wrist strap, the same as Jack's though smaller and more grubby looking, as if both he and it could do with a long cycle through a washing machine. ‘Anywhere, anytime,’ John crooned, reminding him unnecessarily about their ability to travel through time and space thanks to the wrist device. ‘Time to start enjoying life, Jacky boy.’

***

That had been last night, when Jack had sighed and walked out, knowing that his new partner was beyond reasoning with, Jack close to shirtfronting him, if he’d had a shirt.

Now here they were, deep inside the palace of some interplanetary emperor, charged with securing the facility against insurgents. Orders from the Shadow Proclamation to the Time Agency, selectively opting to rewrite history. It had turned out that letting the emperor be kidnapped and killed in a military coup was actually worse than letting the tyrant live. A bit of an own goal since it was the Shadow Proclamation who had armed the militant opposition in the first place with the express purpose of unseating the emperor. Oh well. Jack supposed you couldn't get it right all of the time, and it did keep him gainfully employed.

‘Where are we going?’ Jack hissed in low tones as he hurried after his new partner, getting lost in the semi-dark catacombs of the palace. He hoped this was just some kind of secret passage which they needed to secure.

‘Getting our commission for a job well done,’ John replied. He stopped, leaned casually back against a heavy wooden door and then with a graceful flick of his west, twisted the handle, almost falling inside on top of a mountain of gold and jewels.

Jack grabbed him by the shoulder. ‘No, no, no! This is not what we came here for!’ He'd been unequivocal in the moments before they had teleported. No funny business. None. They had their mission brief and would follow it to the letter.

John shrugged him off and reached down, plucking up a deep blue gem, the size of his fist. ‘Gorgeous,’ he murmured, holding it up but looking past it straight up at Jack. ‘It matches your eyes.’ Then he lowered it and slipped it into Jack's coat pocket. ‘For you, my darling,’ he said, before pottering around to make some further selections, smaller, easier to conceal and easier to sell.

Everything glinted and sparkled; more treasure than Jack could have imagined in his wildest dreams. He lingered over a tall pile of jewels and plucked out the whitest, brightest of them, holding it up to the light, watching the colours spill through the thousand facets. Just that one gem would be worth more than he’d make in ten years.

John sidled up to him, rainbows playing across his face. ‘Good choice.’

Jack looked at the gem once more. No one would know. No one would miss one little diamond. And they’d be far off, hundreds of years from here even if anyone did. Hungry greed washed over him, dragging away all good sense. He looked at John, grin forming on his face, and then tugged an arm around his waist and pulled him close until their lips mashed together in passionate fury. ‘You are a goddess,’ Jack growled once they parted, sliding the diamond in his pocket. ‘Let's go shopping.’
